Am I right in thinking that if a company closes a site and moves to another town then everyone is effectively made redundant. All are either given a new contract and move, those not wishing to are given redundancy?

Or am I way off?

Thanks 130R

It is as I thought. There are no 'mobility clauses' in contracts so those not wanting to move (about 100 miles) will be redundant and can attract redundancy.

It is not quite as simplistic as that.

There is bumping, suitable alternative positions and all sorts to consider.
??? OK but it is 100 miles, no financial help to move or to re-house and new town. All would be offered the same job, same conditions etc as now but in new town. So where does that leave people.

I should add it isn't me. I am happy to move, but some are not as it will cost them a lot of money and they just plain do not wish to move towns.

Is the company offering these people redundancy packages?
Nope. Kind of why I was asking really. I think they are getting a crap deal, move or lose job.

Well that becomes a different issue. Are they claiming to be offering a suitable alternative position by offering a role 100 miles away and not paying any moving costs? And I am assuming the individuals concerned are not Director level and so on?

However, if they "lose their job" they are by definition redundant and accordingly (assuming they have the qualifying period) entitled to those payments (which are not fantastic by any means, but better than nothing).
No they are just normal workers. They do meet the qualification period so at least they may get something then. Thank you.
