This time last year i was working in the civil service. I had a decent job, which i enjoyed, but felt that the pace of life in the civil service was a bit slow. I was scared that I would become used to this pace of life and corporate companies would not employ me.

I was offered a job at a Corporate within the banking industry for a considerable wage increase (£10k) and the package included private healthcare etc. However, a few weeks into the job, and I realised that all that glittered, wasnt golden. I have suffered bullying and harasment, victimisation and encountered all manner of mis management and generally working with absolute 'tools'. I have been to councilling sessions to learn how to cope with micro management and the stresses of working in the new role.

I have been offered an interview back at my old place in the civil service. It would be back to my old wages (so essentially a £10k - £12k pay cut) and loss of private healthcare etc.

My question is - do i go? I have a family, mortgage and bills to pay - will i always regret going back?

I appreciate that this is a personal decission, but any guidance would be appreciated.

Thanks all. I have been desperatly trying to find a replacement job, but it seems difficult. I had one interview and was the shell of the man i used to be, the treatment at my current place has broken me.

I have asked my current employer to move me internally, and they have told me that they will condider this, although it may take months/years to find post.
I apply for internal jobs and am getting refused very early on, even though the job is very closly matched to the skill set i have.

A question for you clever PH'ers.

I am currently on £56k, if i take a post at £45k, this would equate to a £11k drop. But how does that pan out to monthly take home as the take on everything over £50k is 50%, is it not?

Thanks

Thanks - I wasnt expecting answers so quick!

Its really getting to me now - do i jump for such a lot of pay decrease and even that assumes i can find a job.
My daily work is just getting worse and worse, I now have a meadiator am receiving coucelling and am micro managed throughout the day. I cant bear to sit with my team as they are all a bunch of back stabbers and the new contract manager (ex-Vodafone) is a really nasty piece of work.

Each day is hell - i was up at 06:00 this morning panicking about tomorrow.

I have been desperatly trying to find other jobs, but nothing. I am not sure if it is Brexit or similar scaring businesses, or my mind is telling me that I am genuinely crap at what i do.....The confidence has been knocked.

Thank you for the kind words. I have just sold my Porsche 944 so have a small buffer. Two months maximum money to keep me, the family and the mortgage going.
I will keep you all updated, i have annual leave booked for Wednesday, Thursday and Friday this week (and had to fight for it) the next two days will be critical as I am being blammed for not leaving the projects in a good state.

Watch this space.

Look at it this way Roy:

1) Public Sector Pension scheme, even after the changes, puts in the same as a 20% employer contribution would be. The most generous private sector scheme I have ever seen was a 10% contribution. So the 56K you are on is only like 50K in the public sector.

2) Flexitime in the public sector lets you count every minute extra you put in. With no real effort (slightly shorter actual lunch breaks - do you even leave your desk currently?) you can have an extra day off per month, ~ 12 days per year. That works out at around £1800 pre-tax. So the 50K from above comes down to 48K.

Hence, are you really taking a pay cut at all?

Get out before you crack up.
Thanks Flooble. I appreciate your reply. What you say makes sense. Regards the pension, I agree, this was something sacred to long term civil servants. Lunch? I gave not had a lunch break since starting here in December. It's a sandwich at the desk while fire fighting or covering up something after finding problems.

Fingers crossed one of my applications comes through soon.

Meeting with line manager today. My task manager has complained about me and now I am going to be placed on a performance improvement plan.
I hope to escape very soon.

Thanks all.

I didnt get the role i was interviewed for on Monday. I have requested full feedback, so i can improve for next time.
I have a few days off, from my current horrible role - time to think.
The rejections or lack of responses is a real morale breaker.

Thank for the kind words. Mixed emotions here. Ok one minute and feeling like hitting the vodka the next. Just taken the kids out to a farm park, so in a better frame of mind again.

I have another interview lined up for Tuesday.

Update for those interested.

Interview later today - with Govt organisiation in Swindon. It will give me a £11k pay cut over what I earn at my current place of work and is only a 6 mth fixed term contract. The agent has assured me that this ftc is all the rage and it will be extended or made perm if i perform and fit in well.

Its a huge risk.

Update - for those still awake.

I have been offered the job i spoke about last - 6 mth FTC at £11k less than i am currently on in my current mindnumbing role.
I will use this as a 6 mths excercise to get my confidence back and if after 6 mths they re-new - then good, but if not, I will be able to make my own career choices again.

I feel elated that I can escape, but kicking myself that I have been made to feel like this and that they have got away with it.

I am due to hand in my notice at my current employer today and am requesting instant release with pay to the end of the month due to health reasons.
I have accepted the 6 mth FTC, with £11k less (although we have established that this is not really the case) today.

I have no idea why - but i am feeling very low doing this. It might be the old hunter gatherer thing and bringing home less. To top it all, i nudged a freinds car last night and caused (his estimate) £900 of damage...

Thanks Flooble - It was the department i was placed in that was the problem. All my internal stakeholders were happy with my work. My line manager and his biatch were the issue.
Notice handed in and have managed fully paid gardening leave until the end of the month. I have to go in for three hours (supervised) to handover to a colleague and have another hour of exit interview and handing back laptop, phone, ras token etc. I had 7 days leave remianing and they dont pay out for leave - and have given me a few days off.

Very odd feeling and whilst sitting at home wondering if this was the right thing to do, i did some gardening!

New job starts 26th Sept.

"on your Side" - These lot were never on my side.
