I've been contracting for the last 5 or so years and whilst I've enjoyed the renumeration and flexibility I've been hankering after going back into a full time role. My last contract finished in December and although it paid well and we've been having building work done on our house (that has been good to be around for), it has meant that I don't have to work straight away I would rather be busy doing proper work.

Last week I was in a position to be offered 2 full time roles within 12 hours. Both prospectives were aware I had been offered another role and I didn't use the situation to demand more money etc, just clarification of terms so I could make an informed choice as both were similar (ish) roles in slightly different areas- both I was quite happy to do, right level etc.

Of course both recruitment agencies / consultants were pushing their individual clients so I made my choice and sat waiting for the paperwork to come through on Friday. Nothing came and after chasing this morning nothing. Low and behold this afternoon I received a mail from the HR manager direct (not the agency) saying:

Hi mmmunch,
Sorry for not coming back to you on Friday, our MD has decided to change the (not correct job title) role and is now looking for someone more junior.

I do apologise.

What the monkey fk??

I spoke with the Director at the agency and all they could say was 'I'm really sorry'. I was absolutely steaming and told them how unprofessional it was amongst other sweary words as I'd rejected the other role on the basis of their offer..

Of course I've been in touch with the other agency but it looks like I've burnt my bridges (well it feels like it anyway).

I'm just fking fuming that large companies can behave in that way- they knew full well that I'd turned down the other offer for them, but they chose to wait two working days to tell me. I know its not the end of the world, but all my roles a specialised food based ones and I was fortunate that 2 appeared at the same time.

Of course, the other company may still want me (as they stopped the interview process when they met me) but I can't help but feel that if I was in that hiring position I wouldn't want someone who thought that we were second best. that said, I've got the MD's number and thought about dropping them a text/call and tell them I've made the wrong choice...

Not particularly interesting but I just wanted to vent!

Actually apologies for the actual lack of swearing.... 1/10 for effort..

I think my frustration was that the client came back to me direct, rather than the consultant at the agency (who I would have expected to field that question).

I see them the same as estate agents, if my buyer (or seller) is pulling out of the deal I would expect the estate agent, not the buyer/seller to tell me.

At the end of the day they have lost their 20% of my salary commission and strangely not a peep from them today. If that had been me I would have been talking to my client to find out exactly what prompted this so I can at least go back to my candidate and explain fully so I don't look like a complete idiot... but perhaps that's just me and the way I work...
