Hi guys, no matter how I drive my M5 I cannot achieve higher than 12.7 mpg.
Most of my driving is on B roads and having heard other owners achieving 19 mpg I'm starting
to wonder whether there is something wrong with my car!?
Anyone else have similar returns even when when not pushing hard?

Have you checked the iDrive to confirm that the mpg figure is in miles per imperial gallon?
No I haven't. Any ideas how to check this?

While driving press the BC button on the mpg read out for 2 seconds. You will get your mpg read out. On a long journey you should see 20 mpg. Only stop start driving sees it hitting sub teens.

I did 150miles on £50 and could have done another 30 miles if i didnt do the town driving for large parts. Not bad for 38 litres of unleaded.
The reading is 12.7 and that's the highest I ever recall it. Considering only 20% of my driving is in town this doesn't quite add up.
I've reset the calculator so I'll see if this makes any difference. I'd struggle to achieve 100 miles on just £50!
What could cause the car to burn more fuel then it should?

What sort of effective rage does that give?
I've never really calculated to be honest as I don't drive it that much.
The reading is low and I always seem to be filling up!!

My M5 is on 15.8mpg average that's mostly short journeys of no more than 2 or 3 miles as not had the chance to use it much the last few weeks.

Simon
The thing is I usualyy drive in p400 mode and usually on b roads and it's always below 13 mpg.

Have you reset the mpg calculator in the idrive? If it hasn't been reset in a long time and it was all town driving during that period, you're not going to bring the average up.
I've reset it today and will drive it tomorrow and see how I get on.

Definitely check the calculator is in metric gallon and not imperial gallon.
I had a quick look but couldn't find this setting.
What does it come under?

Wills2 and p1tse, won't be easy to make calculations as I don't drive that much and too lazy to work it out!

Well that might be the issue, short journeys, cold engine + heavy right foot?

Take it out for a steady run brim the engine do 100 odd miles then brim it again, worth it to put your mind at rest?

short journeys and cold engine...yes.
But not a heavy right foot!

Just fill it up
Do whatever miles and note it
Full it up and note number of litres to fill up
Put it on here and I'll calculate it for you wink
That's what I'll do and leave the maths to you!

Just to update:

The setting is on miles per gallon, I've checked through the idrive menu.
I've reset the calculator it's still showing a similar read out in the mid 12s.
When I drive it in town the read out falls to mid 11s, when I combine with b road driving it goes up to mid to high 12s.
These results have been achieved on p400 mode and the car hasn't been revved over 4500 rpm and is driven in automatic.

There is the problem. Car is driven in automatic. P400 or P500 wont make a difference.

While driving on a long stretch of road say at 40-50mph where you know you wont stop or brake press the BC button. It should read at least 18mpg immediately.

I think your location has alot to do with it too. Town driving will not see it move out of low teens. A roads will see 20mpg. Motor way driving will see 15mpg.

Automode is cr*p too. Press power...manual and S5 and change up at 2000rpm.
I don't live in town. Majority of driving is done on B roads and some in town.
when I press BC whilst driving 40 mph on B roads it gives me a reading in the mid 12s.

Forget about your mpg problem, you're driving the car all wrong biggrin

Sorry for the delayed update, Schermerhorn you was right.
In manual mode shifting early has made a significant difference and having done a few longer trips
the mpg reading is now over 18.
