Hi,

I know this subject has been discussed before but I can't find an answer that works for me, so I'm hoping some other drivers might be able to guide me.

My M5 has started to squeal quite loudly when I'm braking from speeds of about 15mph down to a complete stop. It happens most often at junctions and traffic lights, etc. and it doesn't happen consistently - sometimes it goes away for a day or two, other times it happens consistently for an hour or so, other times it comes and goes within one ten minute journey. I followed the advice of a few posters on here and braked quite hard from about 70mph down to a stop about five or six times in an effort to clear any rust off the discs, but that hasn't helped at all.

It does seem to happen most often after I've been pushing the car quite hard, but not always. Sometimes it just happens when I'm toodling about the town. I've read that this can be a feature of 'performance cars' but I've never experienced it before with previous M cars and a 997.

Anyone got any ideas before I take it in for an inspection by BMW (who I am almost sure will not be able to replicate the issue)?

Thanks.

I've been told blasting the discs with a power hose does the trick....
I've tried that too with no joy, unfortunately.

Oddly enough mine has just started doing it, although it may just be a case of i've only just spotted it.

At low speed (was stuck in numerous traffic jams yesterday) with the windows open, the braking from say 10/20mph to stop was a bit squeaky. Not loud but defo noticeable. All the drill holes were cleared following my track day on Anglesey Circuit so it's not that.
You couldn't miss it when it happens on my car. It's loud and very annoying but it only started about a month ago. The car is now eleven months old with about 5k miles. The local dealer is talking about taking the discs and pads off and cleaning them, but I don't want to pay for that. The problem with anything brake-related is that warranty cover can come into question.

My M5 has been in three times for this problem.
I eventually took it to another dealer who was going to charge the first dealer to correct the problem.
Miraculously the original dealer now claims it is a known fault and can be corrected by new parts supplied and fitted FOC by BMW if they make a "PUMA" claim.
I'll keep you posted.
Did they tell you which parts will need to be fitted?

Car went into original dealer, Spires of Borehamwood today and they replaced the brake pads.
This is apparently a new fix to cure the known problem, they said it wasn't on the PUMA system when the car went in previously in May.
I've only driven it about sixty miles home and the brakes didn't squeal.
Only time will tell.
Haven't had a chance to report back until now. My car went into a BMW dealer about ten days ago and they were able to replicate the problem. They cleaned the pads and the discs but the squealing persisted so they then replaced the pads and all has been well since. I've done about 300 miles and not a squeak. Let's hope that's the cure.

Oh no! It's back again. No noise at all for the first 2000 odd miles since the pads were replaced but it came back a few days ago and been getting steadily worse for the last 1000 miles. I'm on a long road trip in Europe at the moment hence the big miles over the last couple of weeks. I guess all I can do is take it back to a BMW dealer when I get back to the UK and ask them to look at it as the pad replacement hasn't fixed the problem. Anyone else got any further with this very annoying issue?

Just noticed another thread starting about this, so I thought I'd update this thread to say that my brakes haven't squealed since my last post nine months ago and another 7,000 miles. Replacing the pads did do the trick.
