E93 ipod connection

I've just bought a 2008 E93 and have got to grips with the i-drive but cannot seem to sort out the ipod connection. I've connected via the USB socket and it comes up as"Robs ipod" but whatever option I try simply gives tracks as a long list of 4 letter codes. They play, but I don't know what I'm selecting and I cannot call up the artists, albums etc. I've used the same lead that I use for the computer but should I use the "special" BMW lead the handbook refers to?

I've plugged the ipod in with an ipod/USB lead. Are you suggesting that I should put the music on a USB stick and simply plug that in?
