Six months ago I decided I needed a more practical car and changed by 997 tt for a 4.4tdv8 Range Rover. The RR is a great car but I'm feeling the need for a quick car again and having had a few Ms previously I am very tempted by the F10 M5. My office is 100 miles from home and whilst I recognise that a M5 isn't the ideal choice for the miles I cover I'm prepared to sink some £ into a running a car that makes me smile. However range is an issue for me since I don't want to be filling up all the time (I had a 5.0 M6 and the 250 mile range drove me mad). On motorway runs what range are owners getting from F10 M5s? 400 miles+? Thanks.

Thanks all. The 640d is also a possibility.

I think that's exactly the point, the modern big derv engines are great units and the compromise of economy and performance they represent the sensible choice. Trouble is emotionally a m5 is an exciting prospect, a 640d much less so.

Don't do it! The big DERV's are boring as hell to drive. I've had most M's and convinced myself that a 535D would be 'almost' an M and save me a few quid on running costs.

It wasn't even close. No fun to drive, dull throttle response, dull transmission, crap noise, no sense of occasion when driven, I could go on but you get the picture wink M all day, every day.
I see your point. Currently in a derv range rover though so it's all relative.
