Had a test drive in a M4 today.
After owning many M's and various other performance cars in the past I was excited to try this new M offering.

How disappointing!

Sure it was fast but so boring. The power delivery was just like a large capacity turbo diesel. Loads of shove but zero character.

Handling again was very sure footed especially considering the freezing conditions but again the lack of feel and feedback from the steering and general feel was poor to none existent!

I was truly shocked at how far off the mark the M4 was. I am not usually this critical of cars as normally put any poor feedback down to me just not getting it but in this case the experience was definitely poor due to the car.

With dropping out of the company car scheme imminent I was really looking forward to getting back into an M after boring company diesel barges but to be honest I now don't know what try instead.

Maybe consider a non german option?
F-type? RC-F? Both of these will sound considerably better than an M4 for similar money.
That is a good shout which I must admit I hadn't considered.

Still reeling from the disappointment of the M4, maybe I should arrange another test in better conditions to clarify.

Well had the M4 on an extended 3 day trial.
A different one from last time.

Anyway, decided just to drive my normal every day journeys and not over analyse.

Nice and smooth in and around city centre, quiet and refined on A roads/motorway with a lovely surge of speed as expected.
Local B roads are despatched with contempt with great grip and little roll.

Did it exite?

No, no, no.

Really disappointed! I stand my opinion that the engine and resulting performance is more like a high capacity turbo diesel.
Loads of shove but little noise and entertainment!

If I bought this I would have to get a weekend car as well for pure excitement when I was hoping it would do both jobs well.
Which in that case I may as well get a fast diesel saloon and still have a weekend car.

So much wanted this to work, give me one with less power but more feel and noise and allow me to be connected to what is going on!

So, so disappointed and a backward step for M in my opinion.
