The PCP on my C63 AMG ends in September and I'm wondering what to replace it with. I need to be able to cover 10-15k pa and having occasional use of 4 seats would be handy. I thought I'd settled on a 640d, which really impressed me on a test drive, but am wondering whether I'd find it a bit dull after the C63 and my previous work cars (AMV8, XKR, SLK55, M3...) I think the M6 looks far better (partly because of the more interesting colours available!)and the reviews I have found on line look positive. The fuel economy would be a big bonus with the 640d, but then not many of my daily cars have managed more than 20mpg so this isn't a major concern. I am considering buying secondhand this time - decent low miles 640d seem to be around low £30k, M6 around £22k more. Which would you recommend? My mileage is a mixture of Mway, and fast a and B roads and I am an enthusiastic driver - but not on it the whole time and this would only be used for work as I am lucky enough to have other toys too smile

Thanks for all your replies smile I agree with those that think I would enjoy something a little more special than the 640d (however good a car that is) and for the same reason don't think a 650i would give me enough of an advantage over the 640d. So I intend to test drive an M6 at the weekend driving

Look at it this way

If you bought one, would you be wondering what if you had bought the other?

So, if you bought a 640d (nice as it is), I think you would always be thinking what if I had gone for the M?

If you bought the M, I don't think you would wonder about the 640d anything like as often - maybe only when you were totting up fuel receipts...
Yes, good point. The alleged fuel economy of the M6 is still far better than I get from the C63, and better than the AMV8, XKR etc... so for me at least it could still be a relief! What sort of mpg do you get in the real world in an M6?

Talking of good deals on insurance - insuring my £50k Ferrari F355 cost me £300 a year too! Shame that now I've sold it, it's worth over £80k. Hey ho.

Anyway, back to the topic in hand. I test drove an F Type V8S and an M6 back to back today. F Type was first and I was very impressed, didn't feel like a convertible with the roof up, sounded mega with it down. Only real issues for me being the crazy monthly cost they quoted and the nagging feeling that I could really do with 4 seats occasionally.

Then took the M6 for blast. Bloody hell it is quick! I'm used to driving fast cars, but even so this was pretty much up there with any other road car I've driven. The gear change is epic too. After the F Type it did feel a little lacking in theatre but the interior quality and overall driving experience was very, very impressive. I'm going to speak to Oracle on Tuesday and see how the financing would work out. The logical thing to do would be to keep my leased C63 AMG coupe until it ends in September - it's only costing me £570pm. But I do really like the full spec and colour of the M6 I drove today... I guess whether I keep the C63 a bit longer (whilst M6s continue to depreciate) or opt for the M6 now, it isn't too bad a choice to have to make!

The car I saw is the San Marino blue one at Ripley (owned by a very good chap by the way) Anyone know how common San Marino M6 are as it is my preferred colour?

Interesting to see the M5 performance figures quoted - no wonder the M6 felt as quick as my SLS! I agree with the earlier post about the head up being vital - on the test drive it was only the HUD that made me realise just how fast I was going. The SLS isn't nearly as cossetting so you do have a pretty good idea that your speed is high when you're pedaling hard - although just how fast can still be a surprise...

The M6 I test drove has dropped in value from £112k to £58 in 18 months - and yet, incredibly, it seems to make more financial sense to lease a new one eek I'm still undecided what to do, waiting until the lease on my C63 ends in September seems sensible as I guess the deals on lease M6s may be even better by then - although I might end up having to use something else as a daily driver for a little while after the C63 goes back...
