Ok guys, M5 in for service today- following previous hassle of finding somewhere that does it for a decent price.

Service lady has called up saying "the key" is telling her it needs spark plugs!!??

At 16k miles. Unbelievable - and I don't believe them lol.

She couldn't tell me if it's normal- just kept repeating "the key says it's needed". Couldn't even tell me if the car itself confirms it.

Or if lots of others here tell me it's normal then so be it. They've quoted £600.

But I've never heard of spark plugs needing doing at 16k miles on a car barely over 1yr old?

Wasn't advised on the iDrive, just advised engine oil and check?

Never been tracked- occasionally thrashed but lots of life left on brake pads for example. Spends a good amount of its life driven not too agrresivvely ferrying my kids to their grandparent's house.

I was told the same and then after investigation told my car was 24 months ahead of itself.

I was also told it needed new pads which again was incorrect and due to the car being ahead.

I'd say you don't need them.
Yeah I'd though I remembered you posting something along those lines.

If this is a regular thing I would think they need trading standards paying a visit?

Called them back spoke to a bloke, told him about Hoho's (Thanks!) story and after a couple of mins checking his computer, he agreed that it was a mistake!

Doesn't half leave a nasty taste in the mouth though - seems tobe a prevalent thing where the key is inaccurate.

Fortunately you've discovered it's a mistake.

If it wasn't a mistake would there be any warranty implications of not changing them when they say it needs them? You wouldn't leave the oil if it said it needed that..
I think to be honest i would have raised a warranty claim and if no resolution then maybe got it done at an indy.

Wonder if they would've done it if i was on a service plan spin

Just to round this off, I've got the car back and a couple of strange quirks:

a) the onboard service history (the only record accessible) now shows spark plugs as being done (they haven't), Hoho- does yours?

b) the rear brake pads were showing as needing doing in 5000 miles, now magically showing as 25000 miles left.

I think this shows that buying one of these second hand is going to be a bit tricky if you can't trust the on board service history.
