My current car is due to change later this year and I'm really torn which way to go.

I really, really love my F10 M5 and have always thought I'd simply get a second once this lease finished however I feel I need a different shape for a while.

I've had three X5's previously and regardless of those who don't like them I have nothing but good memories.

We know the 40D is pretty good but the 50D has a certain amount of interest based on the 700nm's of torque and the near on 400bhp along with 5 seconds to 60.

I know it's not an M5 but would I enjoy the car for a month or so and then think.....fk, what have I done?

Anyone have one of these and has anyone actually got any first hand experience with the M5 as well as the X5 50D?

Ah well, I guess that's the question answered............it's a great car but too far away from the M5.

I'm also looking at a 6GC and of course another M5 both depending on deals at the time of change.

The problem I suspect we all have now become aware of is the M5 is simply such a great DD yes and where do you go from here (AM or similar aside)

I quite liked the X5's I had, it's more the driving experience I'm worried about - as I said earlier once you've had an M5 even a good car like the X5 may seem a little dull.

I think you knew the answer before you asked, the M5 is a different car than an X5. The X5 is completely different from a 5 series saloon. Take into consideration that the 5 series is an M5 and the X5 is a diesel then the comparison is no closer and possibly further apart, hey lets throw a Mini Clubman into the equation...

If you want family transport with the versatility for 7 then the X5 is great.

By the way, the F15 is a better in quality to the outgoing model. Test drive one, various engine types, there's more to an X5 then comparative speed, it's a family car, lots of space, a wonderful mile muncher and a really nice place to be.
I had hoped someone might have said what a great drive it is and not a million miles away from the M5.

I'm not bored with the M5 by a long shot but will probably fancy a change and I've always had a soft spot for the X5.

Now what about an X5M scratchchin

It is indeed! The M6 GC is lovely though, and you can guarantee you won't be losing any performance. What about and RS7, RS6, S8 or E63? Or even panamera turbo?
Audi's have never really done anything for me and the manufacturer would have to offer a fairly large incentive to make me consider moving over to an RS6 for example (which in fairness is a more practical car now we have a dog!)

I've had two new cars from Porsche and one used and with their current attitude towards customers I've sworn never to buy another.

The E63 has the most wonderful noise, does nothing for me in the looks dept (which is a shame)

I think an M5 estate would probably fit the brief to the letter........shame frown

Ok, I ran an f10M5 from new for just over 2 years, but by October last year and with the weather changing, I was looking to change.
For me it was an easy decision. On a lovely warm day, with plenty temperature in the tyres the M5 was epic. For the 8-9 months of the year in the North-East of England when it was cold and damp it wasn't.
Not much fun sitting in Motorway spray, feathering the throttle on greasy roads. I'm not kidding, I remember one Autumn day when I couldn't keep up with a diesel Astra van due to issues getting grip.
I borrowed an X5M, which left me amused, but cold. Compromised ride, but faster than an M5 in most real world weather. Contrary to some comments, I found the build quality on the various X5's I tried to be much better than my m5.
It is simply a much more chilled, relaxing and enjoyable way to travel, 90% of the time when going about normal failing driving of sitting around. The road are so busy these days, the opportunities to really push the M5 were increasingly limited.
Eventually I factory ordered an X5M50 which I got Christmas Eve. With a £12,500k discount and a high spec, this came in at £59k. Looking at the comparable deals this came in £31k cheaper than an similar spec X5M.
I think the M50d is tremendous value for money and as a daily drive, unsurpassed. Round the doors it is plenty quick enough and is has an almost V8 soundtrack when pushing on. 2K in averaging 30.4MPG compared to 21.8 from the m5.
I am in the very fortunate financial position to be able to drive pretty much whatever I want, but still like that feeling that I am getting value for money from my purchases. I also have to justify them to my wife!
For me, from my experiences, 95% of the time the M50d is a better proposition(and better value) to live with than either the M5 or X5M. Maybe if I was running only one car, I would feel different, just to get that extra smile on the right road?
This post sums up the reality perfectly. I found the F10 M5 (on various tyres including MPSS) to have traction issues and compromised when it was cold and damp.
I think X5M would be the wrong move and I'm going to try an X5 50D M Sport for a weekend to make an informed decision.

Nothing wrong wit an M5 and if I end up with another I'm not going to chuck my toys out of the pram. I suspect for the driving I do the 50D will be just the job to be honest.

I think you're all a bit mad!

If I ever turn up here suggesting that I might swap my M5 for a diesel X5 "because its a bit of a handful in the wet" can somebody please kindly euthanise me?
Just to clarify I don't find my M5 a handful but simply fancy a change and a powerful diesel is food for thought wink
