Is there an M6 forum (BMW not motorway)
Discussion
Just wondering if there is a specific forum for M6's.
I have a pension maturing in january 2018 (just over a year away)
I've been looking at M6's around £30K on PH classifieds and I cannot decide between a low mileage late V10 or one of the early 4.4's which the way the prices are dropping now will be down to £30K by then.( seen one that was £118K new going for £58K as a 1 year old
Which do the forum prefer? thanks in advance for your help

Hi. I have a E63 (V10) M6 and I love it. It is a truely characterful experience. I believe everyone will tell you to get a warranty as the bills are eye watering should little things go wrong and ruinous if major things happen to be the problem. The biggest issue with the car at the moment is that the parts are ex Germany and are rare so take a long time to arrive and are expensive. The V10 is a crazy lamboesque event of a car with the newer one being much more civilised but still wickedly fast. I have a pension maturing in january 2018 (just over a year away)

My two cents worth, and our approach to it, is that having bought the older car that if it really goes wrong badly then the money lost by throwing it away would be less than the depreciation if we had bought a newer car. By the V10 and join us lunatics over here in our crazy happy place.

I haven't come across many M6 forums that are 'active'. Member of m5board, not much happens on the M6 section, but plenty on the M5 side, and as the mechanicals are so similar it's a good section to browse through.
30K is probably a bit high for a V10, I'd highly recommend it though. One of the great NA engines, unlikely to see one like it made again in the future, especially by a mainstream manufacturer. I haven't driven a new turbo'ed M6 yet, I'm sure it will be faster and more comfortable, but doubt it will have as much character and insanity as the V10 powered one. It will also use a lot less fuel.
I don't use mine as a daily driver anymore, keep it for a blast on weekends or unusual work journeys. Even if you don't buy one make sure you test drive one just for the experience.
Thanks, I will be keeping the A6 estate for the dog so i would be hoping to use them alternate days. 30K is probably a bit high for a V10, I'd highly recommend it though. I like this one, not sure if importing cars from northern ireland is easy. Should be i'm only 70 miles from Stranraer

The cars posted would be my shortlist if they were available in January 18

Thanks I had a cerbera many years ago, sounds like this engine could be just as much fun, do the V8's sound good, cerbera had straight through sports exhausts lots of pops and bangs
The older V8 M5s sound pretty special too but nothing sounds like the V10. Mine is totally stock and still sounds like a fully lit F1 car of the day when you poke it. For not very much money you can put some very rude exhaust systems on the car (very tempting). It truely is a wicked experience. jm doc said:
Had both the V10 M5 and V10 M6 as well as two older V8 M5's. The V10 is absolutely fantastic, the sound is just amazing even on the standard exhaust and the performance is mental with the engine red lining around 8000rpm. The only disappointment is hitting the speed limiter at around 165mph on the autobahn with two gears left to go! Truly a legendary engine and as said previously, unlikely ever to be repeated.
Thanks, as you can see i have my eyes on the classifieds and there seem to be a lot of good ones around, never thought i'd find anything that sounds like the cerbera but looks like i mightEdited by jm doc on Wednesday 9th November 23:00

Agreed M5board is a bit dead for the F Platform M5/M6
I own an M6 Gran Coupe by the way and also a supercharged E39 M5, E34 M5 and E30 M3
Gotta love M Power Cars, new and old alike
Thankyou looks good, really like the look of the one in the first ad in northern ireland but it's a bit oldAgreed M5board is a bit dead for the F Platform M5/M6

Sorry another stupid question, ad says 5.0 V10 SMG what does SMG mean?
SMG refers to the gearbox, all the V10 M5 M6 have the sequential manual gearbox. Takes a bit of getting used to and it's not as smooth or as fast as the newer DCT model F10 M5/6.Thumperson said:

The SMG is a sequential manual gearbox and is essentially a roboticised manual gearbox. You drive it like a manual car and is a lot smoother if you have a little lift off the throttle while changing gears. It has a auto mode but it is dumber that a box of hammers (to quote JC). Some people hate SMG but I really like it and feel it adds to the driving experience. I have a DCT car also and I prefer the SMG. Just a note of caution thought, it will roll away if you don't park it gear or with the handbrake. I think I would enjoy the SMG (a Merc 450 is a 44 ton truck with a sequential manual 12 speed box with auto mode, sounds pretty similar to SMG)

SMG stands for Sequential M Gearbox!! M as in ///M.
Says so in the manual (no pun intended)
It's going to be different to the DSG you have in your Audis. There's plenty of advice on here on how to use it properly, but essentially you're going to have to use the paddles and be in manual mode all the time.
Thanks for that, I only use the paddles in the Audi to embarrass people that think a 3 litre diesel estate is a slow truck (300hp), but i used them in the 3.2 TT every day and with driving for a living in different vehicles every day I seem to be able to pick up different types of gearbox quickly. I like the sound of this SMG looking like my next car will be my first BMWSays so in the manual (no pun intended)

Aah that's fine I've had paddle shift in my last 4 Audi's
Just because it has 2 pedals and paddles on the steering wheel doesn't mean the gearbox is the same...It's going to be different to the DSG you have in your Audis. There is something about an SMG car. Sure it has its flaws but in some respects so does a manual (runs and hides!). It certainly gives the car a little character and doesn't allow you to just put your foot down. You've summed it up well. While in the poor E46 M3 form I still use mine in auto mode quite alot. On a couple of occasions in town I will revert to manual.

Thanks for that, I like the Audi dual clutch system and when I had a 3.2 TT I used to go through the gears with my foot down but in the A6 I tend to back off to half throttle and use the torque.

Potentially. I understand the truck systems are meant to be super smooth now, but yes. Automated manuals have made a return for the trucks, although I guess when you think about it this is unsurprising with the tighter and tigher Euro VI (and possibly VII soon!) limits to come out in addition to other trickery in the trucks including adaptive cruise control which also uses GPS to anticipate roads etc.!I think I would enjoy the SMG (a Merc 450 is a 44 ton truck with a sequential manual 12 speed box with auto mode, sounds pretty similar to SMG)

The Audi uses a dual clutch system; these are super smooth .It probably took me around a week of using my SMG 'box to get used to it. 4 months on I am getting on better with it again!
