So I have a bit of history with MX5/Eunos's...

...I took the black Eunos as a 500 part exchange when I sold my 200SX powered MGB GT.

The photo was after a six hour valet and I used the car that Summer and sold her on for 1200.

I've been messing about with front wheel drive stuff for a while but have missed driving something that wasn't a compromise.
My neighbor has a rusty old MX5 for sale in his garden that's been off the road since 2010 for 500. I was interested but thought it was way too much money. One night I was poking about on eBay and a combination of a lack of sleep and Jack Daniels meant I bid on this...

http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/400706268811?ssPageName=...

...and won.

Hmmmm...

Okay first impressions were "meh" at best. Some knob jockey had pulled the number plate off and stolen the front badge.

The M.O.T ran out May 15th apparently I could see the car needs tyres and a bit of welding on the sills "no big deal" I thought but going through the paperwork the car failed an M.O.T on the 6th. silly

A little worse than expected but salvageable.

Let's get the car cleaned and see what else is wrong with the old girl.

1/ The drivers seat is trash.
2/ the front bumper and drivers side wing are different colours to the rest of the car.
3/ Both rear arches have been repaired badly (by body shop standards or semi-okay for a driveway mechanic) and are the same rattle can paint as the front bumper.
4/ The rattle can paint job had not been masked off properly and there's overspray and tape marks over the back bumper and tail panel.
5/ The roll over hoop gets in the way if I have the sat back enough for my six foot two self. wink

Apart from that...

...she's a bloody nice car. driving

So I was having ideas...

http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Tribute-Automotive-MX250...

...and...

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=O6I3xJuY9i8

...how hard could it be?

http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Lexus-ls400-engine-4-0l-...

wink

But I started with something easy.

Will my Alfa 147 seats that are in my shed address the garbage drivers seat issue?

Nope, but it was an opportunity to clean at least three different kinds of beetle from the floor.

Next to go was the hoop...

...so at least I can sit in the thing without banging the back of my head. wink

Where are you LK?
I have a pair of tyres you could have cheap if you can pick up from Wokingham.
I also have a pair of Mk2.5 seats but probably a fair bit more expensive than you'd want to pay.
Thanks. I have acquired a set of tyres in exchange for welding up an old Nissan Micra floor. wink

I have a cunning plan for bum holders.

As the car needs a respray. How do we feel about this colour?

http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/370574192267?ssPageName=...

Deep custom look without being too mush and I don't have to tell the DVLA as technically it's red. wink

Can you fit a folding hard top from a newer model? That would be cool.
It would be possible I guess but it would add more weight to a not exactly light car.

Thought you were on Power Tour?
That was the plan and I bought the Punto especially for the event but it turns out my employers require more than six months notice to arrange cover so I can have a weekend off. furious

I would have had a decent chance of taking day one as well.

That turned out to be my pain in the arse sister leaving her Corsa in my space while I was at work. rolleyes

Two hours looking for a non-existent leak. hehe

I did a bit of photoshopping at work last night. Dark red and filled in the reflector and side repeater holes.

I think the car looks a little like a C4 Corvette if you squint. wink

As I have cleaned under the passenger seat I thought I'd pop the drivers seat out today and try my Kirkey.

A little too wide at the base and the roll hoop is in the way as usual. Still that's the advantage of Aluminum I can always cut it in half and weld it back up again if needs be. wink

Has anyone put RX8 seats into an MX5 yet?

These would look nice against the red paintwork. wink

Yes it has been done. They are quite big though and look chunky in an MX5.
I had a Google about and could only find MkII onwards with the RX8 seats.

Looks worse than the Kirkey. I doubt I'd be able to drive it let alone sell it to someone over five foot six. rolleyes

Face lifted front, de-channeled sides and the end of pop up lights. rolleyes

I'm just about to start welding the holes on the fail sheet. Tyres ready and the Payday fairies visit Friday so if the Panda deal falls through I may as well put a ticket on the old girl. wink

So I thought I'd have a look at the front hole today...

...doesn't look too bad...

...a quick folded plate lap welded in place.

Well as I have all the gear out I might as well take a look at the back.

Hmmmm...

Under the roughed up paint was a quarter of an inch of filler and a poorly pigeon poo welded plat that had rusted through because it was welded over the top of the old sill. I was that annoyed I forgot to photograph it.

Cut it all out and thought I can wait until Payday to buy the new end section...

...right?

Nope...

...safe to say I got a little carried away (yes it was dark by the time I had got to that point).

Mazda truly have made a car inspired by European Sports cars...

So now I'm thinking sale potential.

If the Panda deal falls through and I M.O.T the car.

How about matte red for the body and in typical J-Tuner style this...

...or this...

...on the bonnet with a few chavy stickers to sell the car to a mug? wink

Obviously with "Dub Scene" and "Drift" in the advert so it sells for three times what the car's worth. hehe

Painted the sills.

No filler or any effort whatsoever to hide the repair plate.

1/ If you need filler you're a crap welder.
2/ Filler on the sills used to be an instant M.O.T fail. Not so much these days but I prefer to show my working.

If I'm preparing a car for off road or rally use I cover the sills up to the bumper line with truck bed liner and paint over the top. It's really durable and fewer holes and cracks means no way for water to get in under the paint and rust from within. Sadly I only had Hammerite today but it looks a damn sight better than it did this morning. wink

Good thread LK. This has also reminded me, I need to check my sills. I hope they aren't dud from the inside.

For the decals, why not try them on the wings?
Stickerbomb the rubbish paint?

That could work. wink

That's an improvement over the Minilite-esque wheels. All four wheels, tyres, locking nuts and nuts for less than one tyre.

These MX5's a bit expensive aren't they? hehe

Out with the old...

...in with the new...

...I like these Porsche replica wheels better than the Minilite replica wheels the car came with. hehe

Six inches wide so tyre choice is a little less restrictive but the lack of power steering is now more obvious.

Hairdressers car? If I drive this about for a few months I could get a management job and grow a goatie. wink
