mx5 Research?

First of all a big Thank You to the good people on this Forum for there advice/help.
I have more questions if i may:
As i know very little about the Mx5 at the moment [never seen one up close, let alone sit in one!...lol]
My budget will be £3000, love leather seats so would go for the Sports version, 1.8 OR 2.0 not sure yet?
Never had a soft top car before and it appears a little tough to find a sport with a hard top?
I'm not dead against the soft top, just have know experience of a car like this?
But when i think soft top, these come to mind; Birds Poo, vandals with knives, green mold and weather leaks, then expensive roof replacement???
When i think hard top, i see somrthing a bit more practical, water tight, warm ect, less problems???
Any Thoughts much appreciate.

Narrowing it down all the time. As my budget is £3000, and you are dead right, it's a MK2 i'm after, 1.8 NOT the 1.6, 2002 to 2005,must be leather seats, the one's with hard top's are tough to find, but they are about...will keep looking!

Never considered mk 1
The lights put me off, but will look again.
One thing I have one my side is being a Welder by trade and doing it for a living.
