JLC Deep Sea Chrono vs Red Sub

I would like to know peoples views re my current predicament and what to buy as a special heirloom piece. The choice is between a 1680 Red Submariner and a JLC Deep Sea Vintage Chronograph (Cermet model):

Having seen the JLC in the flesh it really is a gorgeous watch. The case is 44mm but it looks fantastic- not too large at all in fact. The dial has that perfect blend of simplicity and detailing IMHO. Although you pay a premium for it, I do like the dark case/cermet version but wonder whether that might date eventually? There is a stainless steel version but alas that is only 42mm and I preferred the 44mm.
I assume we are all agreed that the craftmanship of the JLC is beyond question? I would certainly love wearing it and enjoy the lack of general public attention it would receive.


The red sub is alot more difficult. I think it is a total icon watch and one I have prized for many many years. However I historically owned a v nice 16800 sub and rarely wore it as I felt too self conscious doing so. I love Rolex but kind of hate them at the same time. Mmmmm this is a really difficult one to explain but maybe some of you who dont move in super affluent circles will understand.
The Red Sub would in my view probably be better heirloom piece and I would love to see it on my sons wrist in 20-30 years time.


Thoughts?

Is the JLC capable of being an appreciating asset?
What do people think of the cermet case version?
Bearing in mind the number of red subs out there, how much more can they appreciate in value?
What would you get?
