I know that I am being stupid, but this watch:

http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Patek-Philippe-3970E-Pla...

Is worth £100K plus even without papers (it has an extract from the archives).

A replica is worth a few hundred.

What am I missing?

I am sure that you are correct, but who on earth is bidding on it?!

I don't want to miss a bargain!

;-)

The seller got back to me. Because he is travelling a lot, payment has to be made, by card, to 'his company'. Mmmmm. That is about as dodgy as can be.

I have contacted ebay to 'report' that I suspect it is in some way counter to their rules and regulations. Not sure what good it will do, but hopefully someone will not lose their money.

On a completely different note, the search continues.... What do you all think of the 5085/1A?.... It is nowhere near as nice as the 5054/J-001 gold version but quite a bit different in terms of price. Obviously I am buying a watch to impress others, so your opinion matters to me!

In a way I agree. I am not keen on the bracelet, but I sweat so much that I cannot feasibly wear a leather strap. The smell emanating is quite overpowering within a few weeks....

Unfortunately the rolex oyster and presidential bracelets are the only two I really like and they are, well, just so common now. Besides, I have been suckered into the Patek advertising slogan of looking after it until the next generation.

AGAIN!!!

After the posts (thank you) on this thread, I decided on a Patek 5712/1A.

http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Patek-Philippe-Nautilus-...

Now, I see on ebay, that somone in the western Isles of Scotland is selling a Patek 5712 in steel and it is at (less than) £7000.

I have looked on Chrono24. Apart from USA, there is ONE on Bond Street, a few in Italy, Palma, Moderna, Roma and one in Monte Carlo (the one in Cyprus was long gone when I called. The price was low). I doubt very much that someone from Stornoway is selling their Nautilus for less than a third of the next lowest priced.

It is not the same user name as the last one I whinged about, but the description is written identically. Obviously he found the last sale beneficial.

(Apologies to you if you are a genuine philanthropist seller and get joy from selling watches for a third of their value).
