To buy a half decent time piece that would, if not appreciate, NOT depreciate in value?

Probably of of my budget range, but a question worth asking. ...

A Seiko would probably be the nearest but I suspect it won't be prestigious enough.

Full in house movements which stack-up just as well as those of far more expensive Swiss manufactures. Because they are relatively cheap to buy in the first place the depreciation is insignificant.

However as they fail the Veblen test, the answer is probably a Rolex.
Yeah, "Ooo you've got a Seiko!" isn't often heard!

So any Rolex? Am I looking at a budget of about £2k?

Does it have to be new? A used Omega, Sinn, IWC, vintage Heuer (not TAG), Tudor etc will have essentially deprecated enough that you won't lose come re-sale. Models like the Speedmaster and Seamaster are always popular and as new retail prices rise, the second hand market will creep up or at least stay static.
A refurbish one is fine.

How about a vintage Rolex from your birth year?

Age depending obviously.

I was looking at a refurbished stainless oyster perpetual or datejust from 1978 in the £1250 to £2000 range recently.
I liked. But I'm old. 1960.

A whole two grand to invest ? Wow, you'd be better off just getting pissed. Imo of course
I'm not sure if you are taking the piss or just trying to be amusing, so, assuming the latter,I'd just like to point out that I didn't say that it was an investment purchase.

I take it you have never heard of Grand Seiko or Spring Drive?
Acfully no, but that was a comment pertaining to the Verben test.

Exactly his point, though, surely...?

Maybe, except being a bit of a WIS I suppose if someone doesn't know what they are looking at, I don't care what they think, I wear watches because I like them, not to impress other people.

I think we've been here before on the various fake threads.
It's not to impress people. I want something that I like, but I need to justify the expenditure to myself (and my wife!).

The Seiko comment relates to the very first reply on this thread and was simply me showing that I understood.

This thread is just a request for advice fdom someone who knows very little about watches.

I'm not impressed with the snobbery that some people seem to be exhibiting on here, making assumptions, criticising how little cash I have to spend.

So to repeat. I would like a good, solid, robust, quality (not Veblen quality but real quality) mechanical/auto watch.

I have a small budget, and I'd prefer to know that if I spend a couple of months I'm still carrying it on my wrist should I need it.

There have been some very helpful suggestions on here, especially birth year vintages. I like that.

And I WILL look at Seiko.

Now I look at the models to see which I prefer, and maybe hunt one out.

I'm going to enjoy the shopping! I may be in Europe soon, so I'll do some prep before I go.

I think some of you are being wilfully ignorant of the spirit of the question...or you're taking it at such face value that you're either a computer or a different sort of Spectrum.

I hope I speak for the OP that he's implying that he wants something a bit more special on his wrist than a £100 watch, no matter how good the depreciation is on it!

I know there's an almost anti-snobbery thing that goes on sometimes but I don't think this part of PH was really for people who can't see past a Timex or G-shock.

'Quartz are more accurate and a hundredth of the price!'

Yes I know but none of us drive Hyundais and they do the same job as a fancy car.
Yup.

Hmm.

Some people are born t0553rs.
Some have t0553rness thrust upon them.
Some have to work very hard to become a t0553r.

Work it out.

PH is a great resource, a great way of getting advice from people with more knowledge and experience when one is in need of guidance.

But it never fails to amaze me that people DO act like complete tossers in some attempt to be clever, or because they feel slighted in some way.

Of course I can't afford $200k plus! If I could I wouldn't give a stuff about your opinion.

If I was having a chat in a bar to seek advice on a watch, you wouldn't make a stupid suggestion like that.

I've no idea what point you were trying to make, but I asked a simple question (which I knew would need expanding) and I've received some really helpful, knowledgeable friendly advice. For which I thank all who have contributed.

But your statement does nothing to help the thread/conversation.

OK, maybe I'd normally react in a slightly more restrained manner, but I was sitting in an airport which was closing down around me, waiting for a delayed flight, and feeling somewhat grumpy.

But still; how did that post help the thread?

Edited due to a new phone with stupid predictive text.

OK, T40ORA.With a budget of 2k, I'd recommend that you go browse chrono24. Buy from Europe as the pound is excellent against the Euro & you won't get clobbered for 20% import duty.
But, caveat emptor. "Trusted Seller" simply means the seller has paid his Chrono24 bills. It does not mean that you should trust him!

Go take a look. If there's something you want an opinion on, post here or ask by pm. You should be able to work out who on this thread will give you a useful opinion!
Thanks; and yes, I think so too....
