For some time, I've been pondering my first 'big' watch purchase, well, big for me (currently typing with a gold Digital Casio from Argos!) and so far, with a couple of exceptions, my favourite watch is the Rolex Sub.

My Dad has a black one, wore it for a while and quite enjoyed the 'move over, poor person' feel of it, once I'd got used to the weight. My favourite of the subs is the hulk, I think the 'unusualness' appeals somewhat - the price, however, doesn't!

So, unsurprisingly, I'm after an homage to one, if I can find one. The closest I've found, so far, is the Steinhart Ocean 1 Green, but that's the 'kermit' version with just the green bezel, don't like as much.

And so it is that I come to you, the powers of PH, to ask if there is such a thing as a hulk homage. My only criteria are that it needs to be (substantially) cheaper than an original, NOT just a fake Rolex, and probably no bigger than about 40mm, on account of my flimsy girl's wrists - possibly up to 42 at a push.

And yes, I have googled it!

I've spent 2 days 'umming' and 'ahhing' - just read a tandem review of the Ocean 1 and CW Trident C60, and it seems my mind was made up before I started this thread!

I found a 'real-world' review of the Ocean 1 green, my choice, (can be read here if anyone's interested) and I'm sold by its looks, and the way that owners have said it feels to wear.

It's not the hulk I was after, but none of the (very close) suggestions posted here have given me the 'want' value. So, that's the one I'll be ordering.

It's unlikely to be this side of new year, thanks to annoying commitments such as mortgage and offspring, but soon!

For now at least, I've seen a Seiko 5 in green with NATO strap which appeals to me, and is sub £50, so will tide me over nicely until then. Tell me the man maths works?

Thanks all for your suggestions, although it seems they were terribly in vain, and watch this space!

Why don't you sell some stuff (like the 17" wheels off the Bora) to fund the Steinhart?
That's the plan. Although prices of things that I want to sell have currently dropped, those wheels are, currently, not worth much more than £100 ish, that's a 75% loss inside 2 years.

Would like to use my bonus in spring to fund one, but it seems aviation is a lucrative business so my annual surplus may be slightly theoretical.

I'll have to see what Santa brings me...
