First watch - roles Daytona or submariner?

Depends why you are buying, investment or daily wear
For investment buying a 2nd hand unworn Daytona is probably the better bet, but for daily wear I'd go Submariner every time.
Assume you've had a look at these in the flesh? I find photo's of the Daytona on websites to be completely misleading. I bought a black face Daytona 6 months ago but still wear my Submariner more often as its less blingy and easier to read.
I have yea but not the new Daytona which would be my preference but not sure I can wait 2/3 years For investment buying a 2nd hand unworn Daytona is probably the better bet, but for daily wear I'd go Submariner every time.

Steel Daytona = discontinued, so S/H only, NOS stock unlikely, currently overpriced due to the hype of the new version
Steel DaytonaC = 3+ years wait depending on AD and relationship with them
Steel DaytonaC S/H = pay £1,000's over list price
Sub easier to get hold of, but current model is not an investment piece, too many produced
A colleague has been quoted 6-7 years for the new Daytona I'd love one but can't wait 7 years. Steel DaytonaC = 3+ years wait depending on AD and relationship with them
Steel DaytonaC S/H = pay £1,000's over list price
Sub easier to get hold of, but current model is not an investment piece, too many produced

Just out of interest why those two models? They are both very different watches and as far as I can see the only similarity is the brand.
To answer the question I would go Daytona.
Just like them don't know a great deal about watches but these stood out quite liked the look of the yacht master but been put off those. To answer the question I would go Daytona.

Daytonas are overrated
The big price rise killed em
I like the look, but am unimpressed when I put one on
I've got a GMT Pepsi.
Nice
And a SeaDweller
Beautiful watch.
The Batman GMT is worth a look.
My advice would be to not buy until you see what the watch feels like on your wrist
You'll know the one when you really want it.
I think I'll pop in and have a look I do like the fact the SeaDweller in 44mm and I do like a bigger watch, batman GMT looks lovely must admit are these just as likely to hold value as a sub or Daytona? The big price rise killed em

I have a 39mm Explorer and tried on a friends black faced Daytona. We both preferred mine, he got rid of his soon after and said he would get an Explorer next.
Try a few on as I was originally going for a Sub, but decided it was just too obvious and immediately recognisable as either a Rolex or a fake Rolex.
My Explorer flies under the radar, I bought a nice watch for me and not to impress others (i am not suggesting that this is your motivation)
Nearly 3 years on and I just don't wear any of my other watches
Thanks Ill take a look at the explorers. This will also be an every day watch for me and to be honest its partly because I've always liked nice watches, partly because I've worked dam hard and can afford it and yea it is to impress others a little I do like a little bit of bling ha! Based on the pictures and the rolex website the batman GMT seems to be the front runner at the moment.

Daytona price is very poor value for money considering it is a steel chrono, nothing more. By that I just mean that you can get much more interesting/complicated watches for the same money, in precious metal too.
I strongly prefer the sub to the daytona looks/wright feel wise. You should also look at a stainless steel Audemars Piguet Royal Oak Offshore before you make a final decision. Stunning watch, different league to a Rolex which you only know when you handle and try on. The case and finishing standard is far superior and the wrist presence very strong. Very good alternative to a daytona.
AP make about 30,000 watches per year if I remember correctly so much, much more exclusive and interesting..
Stunning watch but out of my price range unfortunately Daytona price is very poor value for money considering it is a steel chrono, nothing more. By that I just mean that you can get much more interesting/complicated watches for the same money, in precious metal too.

How about a Sea Dweller 4000? The case is less 'blocky' than the Submariner and the GMT, and it has the fine adjustable clasp that the GMT doesn't. I never found that easy link thing to be useful - the bracelet is either too snug or too loose with it extended. OMMV of course as we don't all have identical wrists. And it (the SD 4000) isn't as common as either the Sub or the GMT.c
Never really looked into a sea dweller I've booked an appointment to go and try a few on next Saturday so will report back Buster73 said:
I've got a SS white faced Daytona , BLNR GMT and a non date Sub.
The sub is on my wrist 95% of the time followed by the Dayona , the GMT virtually not at all .
Never gelled with the batman after wanting one since they came out , had mine over a year and bet it hasn't been worn 20 times.
Funnily enough I quite like the new Yachtmaster grey faced model , but I'm thinking the same will happen .
Interesting this will be my first luxury watch so will be worn everyday. Why is this do you think? The sub is on my wrist 95% of the time followed by the Dayona , the GMT virtually not at all .

Thanks for the input and good luck with your search the Daytona is stunning and would be my choice of I didn't have to wait 7 years. I just don't like the "hulk" sub at all, still not decided bit hoping to get my hands on a batman GMT within a year as its a present to myself before my wedding next year.
