Interesting.

They are going to buy 200 or so of the 5th gen Russian PAK fighter too no ?

That's a super capable air fleet, more so than pretty much anyone except Russia, China and the US.

I wonder if the UK plans to get into 5th gen aircraft at some stage - if we don't we have very little defence against Russia and China...

What like the F-35 Lightning II that we've paid an horrendous amount to the Yanks to partake in it's development!
Is the F-35 really 5th gen ?

Will we ever get any ?

I would sincerely hope that if the Typhoone deal doesn't come off that aid figure will drop to zero.
£1Bn is a shed load of job creation / hospitals / schools / take-yer-pick in the UK.

I just don't understand why we're giving bribes to India ?
(Nobody really pretends its aid anymore now anyway.) Since it's a bribe - what has it got us ?

India has a space programme, we don't.
Their economy is usually listed at 8th and ours at 6th in the GDP rankings.
They are teh tenth biggest recipient of aid.

Why did the Tory government decide to protect international aid like they have, especially bribes ?

Surely the question is why are we supposedly providing humanitarian aid with one hand, and letting them spend vast amounts of money on weapons with the other?
Indeed there is a lot of poverty in India, it's the only place I've seen people carrying agricultural produce around in fields.
However ...
India has it's own aid programme - that is it gives away it's own cash to other countries.

India is engaging in an arms race with China

and the space programme

Which suggests to me they're not that bothered about their own poor ...

If I was a betting man I'd say the Rafale deal is dead. For one thing India cant afford it.

On another note...
India seems to have a rather strange approach to its fast air fleet.

They are supposed to be buying 120+ Rafales, 100+ PAK50 when they are ready. To go alongside their existing Su-30, Mig 29 and Mirage 2000s.

That's at least 5 very different airframes with overlapping capabilities (superiority and multirole), with the native Tejas fulfilling an interceptor role to replace the ageing Mig-21s.

You have to wonder how they've been deciding on their defence policies.

I can't see why we won't see a nearly complete re-run of their last attempt.

Perhaps the recent spat with Pakistan might sharpen the desire for something to replace their museum quality Mig 21s

They make the UK's defence procurement look smooth and efficient in comparison.
