Looking at the contact marks, the collapse of the belly fuel tank on impact may have helped save the pilots life. I know some heli's have their seats mounted on "Coke Can" type devices that deform on impact taking the "sting" out of it for the crew, I'd guess the drop tank inadvertantly performed a similar task here. A "crumple zone" is the best description. Hope the old boy pulls through!
