The term 'aviator' could cover a multitude of skill levels.

But, assuming a GA pilot, then a 2015 Pooley's Guide would probably be a safe and welcome choice (if he doesn't already have one).

Forces - Rotary and fixed wing including Tornado.
Express your thanks by buying your friend a slap-up dinner at the RAF Club? - excellent grub at very reasonable prices. If they're not already member, annual subscriptions even at the highest tariff are pretty good for membership of a London club.
