The week starts with new round of union initiated disrupted travel for those trying to use the railways in the South of England. Is it a just a question bashing respective heads together in an attempt to move things on from the 1970s, or is there a proper safety issue at stake here?

Interestingly (or not depending on your point of view) the BBC are running an editorial this evening based around the question in my OP.

The rail regulator (ORR) has declared the proposed Driver Only Operation doors to be safe calling it a "a safe method of working".
The RMT claim the report is a "complete whitewash" and accused the ORR of being "nothing more than an arm of Government".

So there's some progress, at least. Or possibly not.

Well, yes. There's a caveat written in the article I linked to stating as such:

Article said:
Transferring the responsibility for opening and closing doors from train conductors to drivers would meet the legal requirements for safe operation as long as suitable equipment, procedures and staff are in place, the Office of Rail and Road (ORR) said.

It seems that the plan to take on 200 "trainees" isn't being particularly well received by the union.

The proposed resolution still has to be put to a vote by Aslef's members so until the Fat Controller Lady sings it's not a done deal yet, but fingers crossed.
RMT weren't included in these talks and their dispute rumbles on.

It looks like Aslef union members aren't too happy about the deal and may well vote against it. Oh dear.

Could we conclude that ASLEF have little regard for the self-loading cargo?
