The bill when going out eating with friends

Anyone find it to be a headache sometimes when it comes to paying the bill with friends after a meal. Some times it can be difficult figuring out the best way to pay for the stuff you have eaten or to just split the bill. But on occasions it doesn't seem fair that some people should pay the same amount if they have ordered less items than the others. Small groups aren't too bad but 6+ people it gets difficult. What do you guys normally do? Are you the person that says to split the bill while consuming more than others or do you only pay for what you have eaten/drank?

What if the person that is having the "works" isn't playing game and doesn't offer to chip in extra. Do you leave it, do you give that person a hint or do you leave that to someone else in the group? I guess it can be difficult to talk sense to some one having the works as they are usually hammered.
