Wine Clubs any good ones ?

We usually buy our wine by looking at what's on special offer at the local supermarkets and grabbing a couple of bottles. Now, I'm no connoisseur but I've a sneaking suspicion I'm missing out on some of the best of what wine has to offer by doing this I don't want to spend fortunes but thought joining a wine club may be a good way of expanding my palate. So are the wine clubs any good, do they offer any advantage to just picking some different bottles off the shelf, any recommendations for a club in particular??
