Kitchen knife sharpener

Having invested in some reasonably good kitchen knives they need to be kept in good condition, just wondering if anybody can suggest the best way to keep them sharp ? Obviously not the £5 Sainsbury's sharpener, but what is the best way or tool to use ?

Thanks for the suggestions, the knives I have are European I think. I'll have to have a look at them again.
