Some music videos are timeless, they look as good now as they did today. Others are of their time - they look very "of their era" today but we forgive them because they worked well back then - they have aged but aged gracefully. But there are some videos that must have been cheesy or dodgy even in their day. For example, John Farnham's "pressure down" has aged particularly badly and looks terrible because someone decided to use every single shiny new 80s videos effect in their software!

Does anyone else have some very badly aged videos to share for our amusement? biggrin

Yeah but the single off the album was pure 80's kitsch!

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wyLrgbMyT4E

Loved the film when I was younger, saw it again recently..... oh dear.
As an avid reader and fan of the Biggles books, that film is an uttery travesty that should be wiped off the face of the earth.

Setting aside the fact it was re-written with the time-travel bit at ther 11th hour to cash in on Back to the Future's success...
Setting aside the fact that most of the props and vehicles are blatantly 1930s, no doubt due to lower budget/ better availability than WW1 stuff...
Setting aside the pisspoor acting....

...... when they cannot even get the most very basic elements of the characters right, what bloody hope does the rest of the film have?!!

Biggles was a teenager in the war, not a middle aged bloke
Ginger and Bertie were not introduced until 1930 and 1940, only Algy was around in WW1
Raymond was a Major, later Colonel, never a Captain (which was Biggles' rank). He was from wing intelligence, not the squadron CO (Major Mullen)
Von Stalhein was Raymond's opposite number in the German intelligence service, not a bloody fighter pilot!
An officer of Raymond's seniority in WW1 would have been well over 100 by the 1980s
Marie was a German spy, not a random villager

...and breathe!

I ummed and aahed about including this one, as Autograph's other well known song, Turn Up The Radio, is a true rock 'n' roll classic that can be forgiven its laser-beamed, dry-ice-smoking cheesiness as some true 80s nostalgia.

This.. well... just can't. Not even the gratuitous Corvette shots can save this budge b-movie of a music video:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cJICFeLvy64

Similarly.... I'm not quite sure what was going through the mind of the nuclear apocalypse fanatic that directed this, Bon Jovi's very first music video. I have no idea what relevance the creepy-faced flaming-eyed schoolgirl has, either:

That's pretty bad biglaugh

Dont ask me how, but I ended up listening to this earlier. The whole thing just screams 90s, with the retro-futuristic identikit-hunks doing that weird synchronised dance. Kinda creepy, actually.

I am sure it looked really cool back in 1977 but not it looks like a poor Stig tribute band.
Daft Punk's dad and uncles?
rofl That's bibilically bad!! What really sets it off is the greenscreening cutting out their hands!

They look like some really bad Dr Who monsters! Have another rofl for your quality find

This video and its plot must surely have looked cheesy in 1982, let alone now!

I'd like to put this forward:

Peter Gabriel - Digging in the Dirt

Why? Because I put it together back when I was a video editor at the BBC. 24 hours solid with only Red Bull to keep us going (Rock 'n' Roll eh?). It had to make a debut deadline on MTV.

There are many many layers of video going on at some points, and without digital equipment of any kind the quality of each layer got worse as we overlaid more stuff. Some bits are good, some not so much, and things like the blue-screen wasp were near impossible to make work.

Still, we did make it work and whilst the image quality is a million miles from what can be achieved today, it won awards and it still represents one of my most memorable days as an editor. (I only did a few music videos and commercials, most stuff was less exciting).
Jesus H Christ on a pogo stick.... how much acid did they slip into your Red Bull?! wobblewobble

Happy 2020!
Stumbled across this video recently:
https://youtu.be/mUFObCZtGWQ

Nice love song, but oh my.... The constant soft cuts between singer and massively staged "everyday life", the sepia tint, and the camera doing circles round the singer during the second half of the song...... It must have all been so incredibly naff back in the early 90s, let alone today!

Plus points for the interspersed "dancing" animals though hehe

Happy 2022 y'all!

There's definitely a very underlying theme of this thread - the 80s! hehe

Therefore, allow me to redress the balance with a much more modern offering from the early 2000s.

-Early 00s cliches of:
- Messy bleached hair, beach surfer dude necklace/bracelets and linen shirt? Check
- Yellow tint and washed out lighting
- Fan/crowd shots jump cutting to the beat

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fJWnIFlYKjs

It's funny how you think "nah, that decade didn't have any stereotypes or cliches, everything was just normal" then you look back in 10-20 year's time and think "oh"

As we roll into 2024, I've recently discovered this song. Cracking tune, but having watched the video several times I'm still none the wiser as to what the fk is going on hehe

I'm nominating Devo's Whip It, not because it's bad (in fact it's barmily brilliant) but because it just would not have a chance today!

An interesting sub-topic for this thread - how many other videos would be insta-banned today?

I'd nominate this one to last all of 5 minutes before someone screamed "cultural appropriation" hehe
