So I've been going through all my older trance tunes from the late 90s, early 2000s and putting together a series of mixes that reflect different themes or times from my early clubbing days. It's a very slow process- part 1 was done about 18 months ago, part 2 last summer, and part 3 a couple of evenings ago! But fitting them in with all the other genres I mix does take time- and as DJing is largely just a hobby (albeit an obsessive one) there are always other things cropping up.

Anyway, this one is part-3 (1 & 2 are also available on my soundcloud page).

This mix was mostly vinyl as most of my classic trance is in this format. 3 (I think) of the tracks were played from mp3 versions of their vinyl originals- purely because I couldn't locate the actual records quick enough and knew I had 'digitalised' a few of my vinyl collection a few years ago. But the quality of most of these wasn't great so I prefer to use the actual vinyl where possible.

It isn't entirely without incident- one of the tracks skipped but luckily it skipped to a largely similar part of the record so it's not hugely obvious. And secondly I messed up the transition into Southern Sun towards the end (I brought it in too early so there is a key clash) which almost made me not post the mix, but I figured for a 2 hour vinyl mix (done entirely live with no post-processing) the odd hic-up is pretty inevitable without re-doing it ten or twenty times over.

Also, I know there are only 15 tracks in almost 2 hours- if you prefer quick 3-4 minute tracks then a transition, this mix is probably not for you! However this is very much my preference when it comes to these classic trance tracks, I hate having them rushed and some of the extended edits really do deserve to be heard in their entirety so I make no apology for that. smile

A few of these tracks are a bit more well known and are touching upon the more commercial releases of the early 2000s. I've tried to keep the cut-off around there as I have a storming collection of tracks from around 2002-03 which I consider to be the golden era of commercial trance, which will be getting into mixed format for another installment!

Tracklist:

1) Marc et Claude - I Need your Lovin' (Original Mix)

What set up are you using?

Nice tight mixes and blends.
Cheers! thumbup

Well this mix was done mostly on 2 x Technics 1210s (an M3d & a Mk2) and a Denon Dn-x1600 four channel mixer.

I also have two Denon sc2900 media players that I used for the couple of tracks that I didn't have the vinyl to hand for.

I'm a bit of a gear junkie though so I also have a second setup of two Vestax PDX2000mk2 turntables and a Stanton SK6 battle mixer.

I also use Traktor for a lot of my 'modern' music now- either using a DVS setup with the turntables, or using the sc2900s as midi controllers. The beauty of this setup is being able to play any format!

This is a pic of my main setup as it is at the minute:

Although it is absolutely chucking it down here at the mo, it definitely sounds better out in the sun!

Nice!

I too had PDX2000s and a PCV275 mixer that I bought off a mate, very nice bits of kit.

A few mates got Serato so we started mixing using timecoded vinyls then CDJs became more affordable so I sold the PDXs and bought some cheap DD Stantons to keep if I ever wanted to dig the vinly out, kept the mixer and got some CDJ800s.

Then sold the CDJs and bought a Vestax VCI300 but it just makes it all too easy and a bit souless I felt.

Got back into mixing on CDJs although didn't buy any as had a few gigs and that's what the venues had but haven't really touched a fader in 2 years now frown
Interesting you mention the CDJs as I had CDJ900s before which I sold to buy the Denons:

I totally agree regarding the midi controllers though- I was one of the last people to embrace the digital age in terms of DJ software, and that was only because me & a DJ mate of mine have started doing a few mobile gigs playing open format music (i.e. everything!) and it's far easier to keep a handle on that within software. I went with Traktor as my Denon mixer is Traktor Scratch certified meaning I didn't need to buy an external soundcard to use DVS.

Even now though, if I use Traktor it is normally with the turntables- I couldn't go to using a smallish midi controller, I just prefer the hands on feel of having full turntables/CDJs. The Denon players support Denon's "Engine" music database (like Pioneer's Rekordbox software) meaning I can hook the two players up with LAN cables to the laptop and use the laptop as a giant music library, whilst all of the actual playing still takes place on the hardware rather than the computer.

It's a good setup and sort of gives you the benefits of using software (i.e. easy library browsing etc) without giving you all of the giant waveforms/auto-sync stuff that comes with full-on DJ software, meaning it's still a bit more hands-on, which to me is a lot of the enjoyment of DJing.

All my older stuff is still on vinyl though- mainly trance, house, hard house, hardcore, and d&b. I've just moved house though which makes you realise how heavy vinyl actually is! hehe
