We are currently adding some bits and bobs to our set list. In the past we've just played stuff we liked which means about half of our songs are pretty inaccessible to our audience. We have a proper pub gig in 6 Oct so I want to add some stuff to it that is..

Fun to play (and not overly tricky)
Not st (well not st when we've finished arsing about with it)
People might know.

I was hoping some of you lot might post your set lists so I can steal some ideas wink

Here is ours so far.

Lonely Boy Black Keys
Times like these Foo fighters
Save me Turin Brakes
Ramble on Led Zep
Fishermans Blues Waterboys
Boys don’t cry Cure
Fade Away Oasis
Chim Chim Turin Brakes
Whistle for the choir Fratellis
Jailbird Primal Scream
Dying Days Screaming Trees
Hush Deep Purple (actually more Kula Shaker)
Just Radiohead
I bet that…. Arctic Monkeys

We rehearsing tonight which will give us.

Trouble Ray Lamontagne
I predict a riot Kaiser Chiefs
Hit me baby Not quite Brittney!
Are you gonna be my girl Jet

We don't really want to get into a load of pure rock covers (I appreciate there are a couple in there that are leaning that way), and like covers that have been spun a bit (hit me baby is based on the travis version but is a but louder.)

Cheers

That's the crux of the matter, it all depends on the audience, and hopefully you have an idea of what age range etc they are.

The stuff you've already listed, I didn't know any of it smile
Have you never seen Mary Poppins?

No, I've never had that experience (and will continue to avoid it for as long as possible). I did have a listen to the YouTube video of the song being done by Turin Brakes however, and agree I have heard the song before.
I can understand your desire to avoid the film, tis a dreadful thing.

We were once offered a bit of constructive criticism by a landlady after coming off stage in a local pub - not enough songs for girls, she said. She had a point & your set too is a touch male oriented I would suggest.

We took that advice on board, split the band up & started again, roundly ignoring her.

Now it's:

Girl from Mars - Ash
We could be kings - Gene
Beetlebum - Blur
Sale of the century - Sleeper
Take me out - FF
Please, please, please let me get what I want - Smiths
Death Cab For Cutie - The Sound Of Settling
Stone Roses - Adored
Smiths - Panic.
Stone Roses - She bangs
etc.

We may be a bit...niche. smile
I have a lot of time for this lot wink When you gig what sort of reaction do you get? Do girls dance or do blokes stare at their shoes..?

Cheers

It goes over well on the whole & the one piece of consistent feedback we get is Oh thank god you're not doing Sex on fire & Be my girl like EVERY other pub band. We're paradoxically a breath of fresh air, round here anyway.
haha, that is good to hear (quietly drops be my girl from the set list wink)

We bring lots of mates & WAGS along, so that helps us get booked, but outside of that, we often see the same faces, so the music is appealing to a certain bunch of miserable emo's for sure - the thing being that wimmins are 50% of your audience & it's a fair point to try & include stuff they're into, you know like Sex on fire & Be my girl. hehe
We'll bring back hit me baby

I play the piano and can never build up a repertoire that long! Well, I could but rather than playing a handful really well, I'd play a lot really badly. silly

I wonder - why not write your own songs?
I've written songs in the past, utterly dreadful ste.

There are people in the band who I think could, however that is all a bit deep. I'm in my mid 40's I just want to have some fun and see people jump about abit when we play.

Don't want you stealing all the best bits of our set, given you're based close to us, but Rocks by Primal Scream is easy and goes down well. For interesting covers, have a search through the Radio 1 Live Lounge albums. Arctic Monkeys version of Love Machine would be good if you can do it without cracking up, they couldn't...
haha, hi Tom thanks for that. We have done Love machine a few times and fail to keep a straight face. We are playing in Linton on Oct4th if you are free.

In the unlikely event that we end up on the same bill we could.

a) be nice and share them out
b) fight for them (there are 6 of us wink)
c) just have a massive drunken jam

I'm voting for c.

Mass jam sounds good, we're back up to 3 guitarfists so it will be a big noise...

We're gigging for charity on 13th Sept in Swaffham Prior if you fancy it. Might try to get along to Linton.
I can't do the 13th, we are away. Keep me posted on other stuff though.

Hi,

Some great songs there. We are pretty new (as in we have only done 2 gigs) but our current set list comes from:

Sweet Home Alabama (Lynyrd Skinner)
Don't Look Back in Anger (Oasis)
Make you Feel My Love (Bob Dylan)
Hotel California (Eagles)
Walking in Memphis (Marc Cohn)
Knocking on Heavens Door (Bob Dylan / GNR etc.)
You've Got the Love (Florence & the Machine)
Honky Tonk Women (Stones)
Brown Eyed Girl (Van Morrison)
Baker Street (Gerry Rafferty)
Head Over Feet (Alanis Morrisette)
True Colours (Cyndi Lauper)
Layla (acoustic) (Clapton)

Soon to be added:
Johnny B Goode (Chuck Berry)
Mustang Sally (Commitments)
Think (Aretha Franklin)

Never realised gigging was such a buzz!

Griff
Gigging is excellent, really enjoying getting back into it. Well it is excellent apart from lugging all the bloody gear about.

Some hopefully constructive feedback:

Not sure Turin brakes x2, screaming trees or "trouble" are going to get them jumping much, if,that's what you want

Some suggestions:
Zutons - Valerie is obvious one but I prefer pressure point
Killers - any of the early singles
Strokes - last night
Razorlight - golden touch
Klaxons - their cover of it's not over yet

And the absolute dead cert
The Coral - dreaming of you
It is constructive thanks. The Turin brakes was almost by accident and it is a lot more driven than the original. The Screaming Trees one is very odd. We have made it a lot shorter and keep trying to drop it, it will go soon I think. Trouble is going in to give people a break from their frantic dancing wink

Early Killers is on the list for later in the year, we just need to pick the track.
I hate Razorlight with a passion and don't like that Strokes song. The Coral is a good call, thanks.

I'm working on Hey Ya!.....
