Hip-Hop Heads - Lyrics Matter
Discussion
Don't really want to start a debate about whether you think Hip Hop is good or not, that can be saved for another thread. I'm very aware that it's not to everyones taste, so if that is the case, you can click 'Back' now.
Anyone got any great lyrical moments that I can listen to?
Recently, I've been listening to the BET Cyphers and this is my favourite year;
Mos Def, Black Thought and Em
Or
Nicki Minaj, Joe Budden, Mos Def, Em (If you can stand Nicki Minaj...)
Anyone care to share their favourite lyrical moments?

I struggled with the emergence of gangster rap, but that was fine because the mellower stuff from De la Soul, Pharcyde etc just seemed to get better.
A Wolf in Sheep's Clothing was an album I listened to over and over. -Black Sheep were definitely lovers not fighters.
Funnily enough it might be a tad NSFW

I was a die-hard fan of hip-hop in the eighties. For instance, I had pretty much every 'Electro' in the Streetsounds series and I played them to death. Then came the likes of P.E, fantastic stuff! It all got a bit too serious for me after that...
Lyrically - this is jolly good though!
Public Enemy - Black Steel (in the hour of chaos)

Really enjoyed those two songs. Love the line about it not being foreplay because he uses his thumb
Talib Kweli is also a massive favourite of mine;
I Try
In The Mood
Hot Thing (HP Advert anyone? )
Soon The New Day Feat. Norah Jones
ETA: useyourdellusion - Yeah you did! Major fan of that track! Great choice

If lyrics are your thing, I highly recommend the little-heard-of-gem that is 'Latyrx'

Check out Quannum projects.
That label has some pretty talented lyricists......not the mainstream crap your hear all the time.
Look out for;
Latyrx - as above
Lyrics Born
Blackalicious
I'd also recommend Kero One
And, stubled across 'Atmosphere' a few months back. Pretty good shout as well.
Enjoy

Tribe Called Quest - Electric Relaxation (cant find an active version on youtube though...)
Dre - Forgot about Dre. Specifically the bit where Dre comes in after Eminem's little bit is fantastic. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uJzeO4Pt8ms
Ludacris - Hip Hop Quotables http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=A3mIl0ja9gg

I've been a major hip-hop fan since I can remember, so I'm not starting out fresh, was just after the songs you love in particular for it's lyrical content.
Good shout on the Mobb Deep, Shook Ones is obligatory listening for any fan.
Shook Ones
Also, thought I would add some epic tracks;
Gangstarr (Feat. Jadakiss) - Rite Where U Stand
And
Big Pun & Fat Joe - Deep Cover '98

i love the vocals on the first two Jurassic 5 albums, you can tell they grew up listening to things like Run DMC and they just rap in a way that you can tell their whole life was dedicated to perfecting the art. i know they are the cliche hip hop band for people who dont really like hip hop but i think they are still better than 99% of the rest...
