Anyone else here a fan of them? scratchchin

I first went to see them in 1993 when they supported Bon Jovi and Billy Idol, going on after Little Angels. Obviously they were a four piece band back then but really seemed to get into them after Richey vanished in 1995.

I know a lot of fans don't like the post-Richey stuff saying it's gone too soft but if they'd remained as they were, I may not have got into their music.

Sat here listening to some of their tracks and could easily have six or seven of them in my top twenty tracks ever but would, if pushed, have to choose "Motorcycle Emptiness" as the top one of all although special mention should be made for "Roses In The Hospital", "Design for Life" and "The Everlasting" as well. Oh, and "Drug Drug Druggy" too. And...

Better stop here now before I go through all their discography.... hehe

Thread resurrection alert.

Went to see them last Tuesday night at the O2 Academy, Bournemouth, a tight small venue holding around 1,800 people. Just the right size to feel a little intimate at.

The support band were "Escapists" who were pretty damn good actually. But the Manics blew me away, literally. Played songs from nine of their eleven albums including three from "Generation Terrorists", two from "Gold Against The Soul" and two more from "The Holy Bible". Played 23 songs in a two hour set, beginning with "La Tristessa" and ending with the finale "Design For Life".

Doesn't feel like 21 years since I first saw them but after hearing two tracks from the new album "Futurology", reckon they'll be around long after they celebrate their 30th anniversary soon.

Still wondering where Richey is/was though. frown

Good to hear that they can still cut it -- what did they play from "The Holy Bible"?
To expand on that...

The Holy Bible - "Die In The Summertime" and "Archives Of Pain".

Generation Terrorists - "Motorcycle Emptiness", ""Stay Beautiful" and "You Love Us"

Gold Against The Soul - "La Tristessa Durera" and "From Despair To Where"

I really like the opening verse of 'A Design For Life'

"Libraries gave us power, then work came and made us free" is an awesome opener, I think.

Should I getmecoat ??

Also. Am I the only one who bought/enjoyed James Dean Bradfield's 'Great Western'?
Entirely devoid of singles, but a really great album (IMHO).
No.

And yes!

I think the "Libraries gave us power" comes from the engraving over the entrance to Newport Library where it says "KNOWLEDGE IS POWER", I think.

New album "Futurology" out in early July, can't wait. Based on the first three tunes I've heard, I'm going to enjoy this one.

They played the title song and "Europa Geht Durch Mich" on their recent tour and the first single from the album "Walk Me To The Bridge" is so bloody catchy as well. Think this will be a cracking album.

I think James is great when he plays acoustically
Definitely. He played "From Despair To Where" acoustically at the Bournemouth gig; strange choice of song to perform that way but he nailed it.

I heard a Manics song played on Kerrang radio yesterday between 10 and 1, was really good but didn't get the name.

Their listen again player isn't working, long shot....but did anyone hear it/know what song it was?!
Can you give us some clues? Fast or slow, acoustic or banging? Any words or phrases you might have caught?

Does that Kerrang show specialise in older stuff or new hits? They have a new album out and some of the songs are out and about already.

I love a good mystery, me.

So has anyone gone out and purchased the new album "Futurology" this week?

I picked up my copy on Monday at HMV in Cardiff where the band were doing a signing. Absolutely love the new style sound although I bet it will alienate some of their more hard core fans. Not sure what my favourite from the album is but I guess "Black Square" is up there.

Heavily rumoured they will tour again in a few months, celebrating the 20th anniversary of "The Holy Bible".

Another thread resurrection!!

New single out now - "International Blue" from the album released in April called "Resistance Is Futile". Link below.... I think I like it though it is growing on me with every play and it sticks like an earworm which is always a good sign.

Hopefully, Father Christmas will bring me a ticket for a gig next year. Eight gigs, they're playing on my 50th birthday but in Llandudno which is pigging miles from here so may have to settle for Wembley Arena.

I was never a big fan but like their better known songs. My 18 year old daughter loves them and I took her to see them at an open air gig in Bristol in June and was quite impressed. Going to the Cardiff gig in May and looking forward to it.
Was that the one by the Lloyds building in the Harbourside? That was a good gig, a few folk I know went to it.

I'm almost the opposite to you then.

Barely listened to the Manics pre-1993 and saw them live supporting Bon Jovi at MKB in September of that year. Liked them but it wasn't until Richey vanished and the music style changed somewhat that I got into listening to them. If they had stayed sounding like THB, chances are I wouldn't have given them a second listen.

Off to Wembley Arena in May for the fourth Manics gig. Would hardly call myself the world's biggest Manics fan but I do love their music and the stuff post-Richey certainly appeals more than the pre-Richey stuff.

So is anyone here admitting to buying the new album "Resistance Is Futile", released on Friday?

I may have invested in the signed deluxe limited edition one that duly arrived via the postie before the weekend. Definitely an album of two halves with the split coming after "Liverpool Revisited", track six. Not over enthusiastic about too many of the latter tracks but "International Blue" is as strong as it was on release four months ago. "People Give In" is another great track, albeit a little quirky and "Liverpool Revisited" is truly fantastic. Shame it's a little short at two and a half minutes but there you go.

Off to see them in just over a fortnight at Wembley Arena, supported by The Coral.

Well, went to see them at the SSE Arena (formerly Wembley Arena) on Friday night and they were outstanding, absolutely brilliant.

From the moment they burst into life with "International Blue" till the last embers of "Design For Life" nearly two hours later, they nailed it. They've done a song with The Anchoress on the new album and she was there in person to sing it plus two others (Little Baby Nothing and Your Love Alone). Nicky sang a song, a cover of the Sex Pistols "No Feelings" which went down a storm but they were just simply superb.

For those wanting a set list....

1. International Blue - Resistance Is Futile
2. Motorcycle Emptiness - Generation Terrorists
3. No Surface All Feeling - Everything Must Go
4. Distant Colours - Resistance Is Futile
5. Your Love Alone Is Not Enough - Send Away The Tigers
6. Little Baby Nothing - Generation Terrorists
7. Dylan & Caitlin - Resistance Is Futile
8. You Stole The Sun - This Is My Truth
9. Forever Delayed - n/r
10. The Masses Against The Classes - non-album song
11. Horses Under Starlight - n/r
12. Everything Must Go - Everything Must Go
13. If You Tolerate This - This Is My Truth
14. Faster - The Holy Bible
15. Stay Beautiful - Generation Terrorists
16. You Love Us - Generation Terrorists
17. Walk Me To The Bridge - Futurology
18. Hold Me Like A Heaven - Resistance Is Futile
19. Tsunami - This Is My Truth
20. No Feelings - Sex Pistols cover
21. People Give In - Resistance Is Futile
22. Slash And Burn - Generation Terrorists
23. A Design For Life - Everything Must Go

Another thread resurrection alert....shout

Off to see them tonight at the Bath Forum in, er, Bath. It's the 20th anniversary tour of the album "This Is My Truth, Tell Me Yours", a shortish tour of thirteen dates this month. It'll be the 5th time I've seen them, going way back to when they were a four piece in 1993.

Looking at the set lists published already, they're not just playing songs from that album but most of the others too. Can't wait, although these days, I'm more of a fan of The Killers.

They were fantastic, PT. I'm a bit meh about the support (Gwenno Saunders) but the boys more than made up for it.

The gig is definitely in two halves and they played a couple of left field songs. Won't spoil your fun by going further but they were superb last night.

Anyone listening to the new album out today then? scratchchin

Signed album not arrived via Mr Postie just yet so I'm having to listen via YouTube this morning to "The Ultra Vivid Lament" via that method. Obviously the two singles "Orwellian" and "The Secrets She Had Missed" stand out but there are several other absolute crackers on there, none moreso than "Afterending" which is rocketed into my Top Ten Manics songs, what a beautiful song.

Have 300 miles of driving ahead of me on Sunday so hoping postie gets here by then. angel
