Where do people sell modified off- & on-roaders?

Looking to buy myself a cheap but capable 4x4 to get into some offroading, but nothing extreme. (Still needs to be road legal with windows and relatively clean/tidy for occasional family use.) Something like a WK or WJ Grand Cherokee or a Discovery, but with decent tyres and a mild lift kit? A winch would be a bonus!

Whenever I search for Cherokees for sale I see nice-looking, bog-standard examples that seem to have been well cared for. Where are all the modified ones for sale? Is there a UK forum for people who are into the off-roading hobby and greenlaning? This PH forum seems pretty dead.

Thanks Smint. You're probably right - some half-decent A/T tyres with reasonable road manners could be all I need to begin with if the car has low-range and some sort of traction control or locking diffs. I'm going to do some pay-and-play days and would like to be confident that I'm not going to get stuck (or rip the bumpers off) on the basic obstacles. My mate's bog-standard 3 year-old Wrangler was amazing in low range at one we did two weeks ago, even on (big) road tyres.
