Monoposto car

Hi all- keen to get into single seat racing. Total beginner- got my ARDS test done last week. I like the look of the monoposto club- and wondered what views people might have on the different types of vehicles available.
I am interested in views on whether to buy or rent for the first season, but more- on what car to try and get behind the wheel of.
I am looking at Formula Vauxhall Lotus, van diemens of various models etc.

There a loads of FF types though no? And I appreciate I am ignorant- but is it the engine that makes a car FF- or the whole car? What is the difference between the series/ cars. Is one more suited to a novice etc.
