Centre console and IVA
Discussion
I have decided to take the bold step of fabricating my own gear shift mechanism. The reason being that I prefer the cable shift to rod operation but dislike the driver's seat being offset from the centre of the steering wheel.
So my plan is to take the standard 996/997 gear shift mechanism and produce a narrower version. This will allow me to have the seat more aligned with the centre of the steering wheel.
I may also raise the mechanism and generally play with the positioning to suit my seating position.
My question really is regarding IVA. Will I need to fabricate a custom console to surround the mechanism or can I leave it bare and exposed?
Also, does anyone have a 996/997 mechanism they no longer require?

Thanks steve for your response on this.
Can anyone using the factory supplied centre console/996 mechanism tell me what their steering to seat centre offset is?
By fabricating my own mechanism I hope to reduce the unit width by at least 1.5 inches.
If I can get an idea of the current offset that would allow me to determine the gains.
