Removable dash
Discussion
G'morning,
Has anyone cut out the front of the dash and replaced it by a removable panel giving easier access to the wiring behind?
As I am a member of "The Old Gits Club", I was thinking of this as an option in order to avoid having to do contortionist actions to get below and behind the dash in case I need to intervene there.

Good idea! After spending the last week trying to get to a 12v power connection on the fuel guage to source some power to rig up the rear canopy catch sensor lights I did not build the car, lol, now I know how it is constructed. After lots of head scratching, using multi meter, torch and late nights in a poorly lit garage with my feet in the air upside down I sourced a power supply and job done. Now have a ringing tone and lights flashing for rear canopy catch warning.

I have a customer’s car where the whole of the dash and top are removable.
If I were doing a build I would avoid removing everything as it is proving very difficult to come up with a reliable way to secure the dash top when refitting. It is not possible to use fixings around the front edge below the windscreen so you need something that slides into engagement as you position the dash top.
A removable dash front would be an advantage.

i nearly did that on my redesigned dash
front edge would just be pushed between windscreen and orginal dash so no securing needed.
face of dash would be removable with top too to expose chassis cross member and wiring
wouldnt look at of place
here is the thred from May

I think the point is both Ron and I work in the helicopter biz. Both of us have seen the results of poor access to areas that need occasional work. He as an engineer, myself as a pilot. Yes, the mod on the yellow car was mine, I only regret that I did not do it to my build. Hind sight is 20 /20. Speaking for myself only, there are a small number of things in the Ultima kit that can be improved and under dash access might be at the top of that list. Lee
A timely thread.... The accessible dash is a great idea, I wish I'd done it on my car.
Having removed the passenger seat, centre console and lower dash panel, I've spent the last 3 nights under there with a torch trying to find what's blowing my N/S side light fuse. I'm young'ish, slim & slightly flexible and it's not been fun The fault wasn't the wiring, but a problem with the illumination in my Start button, grrrrr!! If I'd got better access or a removable panel, it would have been a lot less hassle.
Builders take heed, do this while you can!
