Came to start the Canam for a run today and and the car started OK getting it out of the garage. Did a few chores like checking fluids etc and went to start. Motor spins but pinion does not engage.

Any ideas? I'm not familiar with inner workings. All connections appear in place and tight.

SBC with G50-01 box rear mounted starter.

Will check teeth on ring gear tomorrow.

Thx for suggestion and diagnostics.

Thx Steve, that was my understanding as to operation of the starter. It is spinning but did not expect that the loss of teeth on the ring gear was a possibility.

Thx Lee for pointing out the starter topic. Search was not working for me when I posted.

Will get the starter off again and look at the gear. I should have looked at the ring gear but didn't! Sounds like a painful job replacing the ring gear, what with gearbox out and all.

So further info re problem. Taken starter off and the ring gear is in reasonable condition. Pinion on starter is fine.

Diagnosing further, the fault is sheared gear in starter gearbox. Starter shaft moves out under battery power OK and the motor runs when shaft extended. The pinion seems to turn under starter motor power but I could stop the pinion spinning with a gloved hand. (carefully! but it just had to be that)

So new starter required. Will look for a more powerful one than the original as it was sometimes struggling to spin the engine. Any suggestions, Lee suggested the GT3 option?

Thanks for the thoughts about the problem.

The original 2004 starter supplied by Ultima had developed an internal problem. I sent the unit to WOSP so that they could supply a new unit that would fit. They diagnosed the fault in the old unit and I could have had it repaired by them. In fact, I chose a new unit 40% more power (1.4KW) and it's great. Fitted perfectly. The old starter never turned over the engine like this one even when the battery was new.

It was suggested on here that beefy cabling would help. I had installed heavy cabling from the battery for the negative to the starter mounting bolt as part of the original build anyway so that was not the problem. And I had fitted a larger battery PC1100 than the PC625 that was spec'ed.
