I bought a Toshiba 40 inch telly on 08/12/2012 and the top of the picture has gone all grain, probably the top third, suspect the panel is
knackered, obviously not worth repairing but I am really annoyed that it hasn't even lasted two years, someone at work mentioned some EU legislation about stuff being of merchantable quality for a reasonable time, is it worth taking it up with Toshiba or just cut my losses ?

This is the second Toshiba I have bought, bough a Samsung earlier this year, wont be buying another Toshiba based on this !

Toshiba contacted me and asked me to do a Reset, made no difference as expected so emailed them back and waiting for a response.

I suspect they will tell me to buzz off but I will see what happens, I really would be put out at spending £500 for less than two years use.

Will check out the EU link, a mate at work mentioned this.

As anticipated,

Thank you for your recent reply.

As you’ve performed a reset on the unit but the problem still persists. This would indicate that the television has developed a panel fault which would require a repair. We’re so sorry for the inconvenience.

As your television is out of warranty, this means regretfully, we’re unable to provide a free repair for your unit. We’ve provided your nearest Toshiba Authorised Service Provider (ASP) who will provide you a quote for parts and labour. You can find their details below:

Again, who sold you the TV? Read the SOGA info I posted and contact them, they are responsible for supplying a product fit for purpose, they have not done so, a TV should work for more than a couple of years.
Ok, will try that avenue.

Currys it was.

Currys want £95 to come and collect it, then they will determine whether its down to a manufacturing fault or something else, might cost £95 or it may cost the full price of the repair which would probably be more than the TV is worth, to be honest, its ok (when it works) but the Smart Functionality is a joke and I think I may as well cut my losses, a mate has a Samsung 40 inch spare he will let me have for £100 which sounds better than ending up with a potential bill that would buy a better tv new anyway.
