Blue Ray Players, unreliable?

Twice now I've had faults with Blue Ray players, a Samsung, now a Sony, neither have lasted 12 months. The Sony less than 4... !
What's going on, are these things prone to failing?
Faults are discs skipping, the feed to the TV just being lost completely, flickering and blueing out. It's just crap!.

I did wonder about the mains supply, one of them died around about the time we had a power cut. But I have never had any other electronic items fail like this. Perhaps the build quality of new kit is getting worse and less protection is built in?.

I've done a software up date and it seems to be working now, will see how it develops.
