find car stereo to work with multi-cd player

I have got a very old Pioneer car stereo and it has just packed up. There is a multi-cd player in the boot. When I tried to buy a new stereo I was told that I won't be able to use the cd-player any more because it's impossible to buy a modern head unit with the correct adaptor. Is that right? Sounds a bit crazy to me but then I am not exactly very up on these things. I don't have an Ipod or ipad etc and just want to be able to play cds. Any suggestions?

thanks. I have had a good look on e-bay, which hadn't occurred to me, and there are some head units that are described as compatible with multi-players. Just surprised that modern units aren't.

blimey - things have moved on. My phone is only one step on from the kind that people used to have on the wall but clearly I need to get myself updated a bit. I had no idea that I could get so much onto one disc. Incredibly helpful - thanks very much
