Budget pretty flexible but would rather have ceiling of £800

48" to 52"
Must be wall mountable
After good picture quality, good slim looks, good connectivity and Smart functions

Not bothered by 4K or 3D
Not fussed about sound quality, its usually a compromise and I have a Sonos soundbar / sub / play 1s setup

I will watching through a Sky+HD box or possibly Virgin/BT (the next decision)

What Hifi recommendation was Samsung UE48H6400 which looks good value at £600, replaced with the newer £650 H6700 though not sure what the difference is

Your views on this set and other recommendations please

thanks for comments

just to clarify, its got 3D fair enough, but not bothered if it hasn't

inevitable man maths has moved me to looks at 55"s and 4K which I assume may be useful in future (unlike 3D)

shortlist is currently:

Sony KDL50W829 £599
Sony KDL55W829 £779

Samsung UE48HU6700 £649
Samsung UE55HU6700 £899

I will read up on the reviews on picture quality, but the specs seem very similar apart from:

Sonys are NFC enabled
Samsungs have Freesat HD

Will I ever use NFC?
Will Freesat make my Sky HD box easier to control on TV ?

Freesat is free to view TV via satellite. You need a dish to use it. I ran an extra cable from my Sky dish to my Freesat TV (if you have Sky+, you should have 2 spare connectors on the dish).

It's just another way of receiving free to view channels, slightly different channel choice to what you get on Freeview. Nothing to do with Sky, apart from you can use your Sky dish to receive it.
Thanks, does your TV integrate Sky HD channels in a different way due to having the Freesat?

What channels do you get on Freesat that you don't get on Sky with the full package?

I am struggling to see the advantage of Freesat if you have Sky or Virgin

Also can someone explain this comment I read on another website, as I will be chasing cables through a chimney breast

"The Samsung has a removable power lead where as the Sony's one is integrally built into the transformer, which means if you are putting leads through walls it could be a bit pain"

thanks

If you're hiding cables it isn't as easy to extend the cable (if you need to)
thanks - so the Sony power cable is fixed to the back of the set?

Freesat is simply free channels through a dish. It's free and has roughly (actually a few more) the same channels as Freeview.

If you have sky or virgin then you'll continue to use that which will be accessed through one of your HDMI connections. However, use the source button on the TV and select TV and you can watch the FreeSat (or freeview if using an
Aerial connection to your coax connection - Samsung supports Freesat and Freeview) channels. Sky has more HD channels than Freesat I believe.
thanks that was my guess

struggling to see the point of either Freesat or Freeview given I will always have Sky or Virgin or similar

which pushes me more towards to Sony, its usefully £120 cheaper, has slightly nicer styling (particularly the silver framed version) and I have read build quality may be a bit better (aluminium over plastic)

just need to demo the picture somewhere now

Sony KDL-50W829 - Now down to £599 at most retailers.

Some stellar reviews when it was a 1k set, at that price it's a steal!!
If anyone is interested I went for this although the silver framed W815 version, ummed and ahhed for weeks but ultimately it and the Samsung are both great sets but the silver aluminium frame gave it a quality look rather than the black rather plasticky looking frame of most sets.

Picture is great, sound so-so but didn't care as I have a Sonos sound bar woofer and rears. Huge manual ended up being only the wall mount instructions in a 100 languages! No manual it's all on the TV menus (new to me)

Baffling array of features that I haven't explored yet

Anyway cheers for the tips
