I am seriously thinking of upgrading our 50" Panasonic plasma TV with a 4k HDTV.

I have read that there are some who were disappointed with their LED replacement for their old plasma TV's, and if I am doing to spend near the £2k mark, I would like to notice the difference when watching Blu Rays and other stuff.

The choices are narrowed down to this OLED TV:

Or this LED TV

Would the OLED be the better bet, or are the newer LED TV's near enough in terms of picture quality?

Cheers.

£2K might get you a B6 LG 55" OLED - better PQ than any LCD I've seen (and I looked at a few!) and is at least two generations on from that 920V.

It's also 2.0a compliant so HDR (and Dolby Vision) on all inputs.

Personally, I've always gone for a slightly better quality over bigger screen but understand others are prepared to sacrifice a little PQ to get another few inches.

Don't judge a TV using SkyHD - 90% of Sky content looked st on my previous plasma and still looks st on my current OLED.
Stream some 1080P or 4K or try a bluray or UHD disc - that's when things get interesting.
Cheers. We don't watch a lot of SKY any more, usually Netflix or Amazon Prime (and games) via the PS4. I have my movies and box sets backed up in MKV format across 8x 4tb HDD's attached to our HTPC (both DVD and BR, uncompressed), but sometimes play the actual BR through our PS4 too. All is played via our Denon AV receiver with upgraded speakers and sub woofer.

Would it be better waiting a little longer to see if OLED TV's gain more traction?

I don't watch or subscribe to any sports channels, we watch a lot of box set type programs, though..

OK, I think that if I am going to spend so much on a TV, I may as well get the one with the best possible picture, and the LG B6V would be the one to go for. Am sure the likes og GoT and my Star Wars BR collection would look fantastic, rather than just great..

Thanks for that. I am seriously thinking about it. I went into RS in Cheltenham today and they had this model on display, great picture!

OK, I ordered the LG 55B6V TV with the Currys 10% off code. Hope it's worth the money, never spent so much on a TV!

I did, yesterday. I went to see it in action in the RS store. What I meant was that I hope the picture quality is noticeable with my BR's, compared to the 4 year old plasma screen.

Plus I am hoping the wall mount will be the same fit..

ISF 1 or 2 and turn ALL enhancements off.

That's an excellent starting point.
OK, will have a fiddle when I get it mounted (!!)

I am praying my HTPC works OK with it, via the HDMI..

Depending on what spec the HDMI port is on it it might only do 4k30 not 4k60.
What does that mean, refresh rate?

ETA -It does state that it can play video files via one of the USB ports, but I had a HD enclosure that houses 8x4tb HDD's, full of uncompressed MKV files. I think that may be too much for the TV, I know most BR and TV's won't recognise drives larger than 2tb.

It's arriving today, am so excited!

Have ordered a few more BR films, which I already have in DVD format (Gravity, The Martian, Oblivion, Jurassic Park 4 and the two new Star Trek films).

I just know I will end up buying a 4k BR player at some point, but right now, I am hoping my PS4 will be good enough. (Pity the new higher end PS4 doesn't do 4k HD BR's)

OK, have set it all up and connected everything - The HTPC works fine with the new TV. I love the fact that there is so little border around the viewing area. Only one small gripe is the power lead. I don't think it will be long enough to reach the socket once secured to its wall mounting.

There is one thing that I am not sure of.

I have connected a HDMI lead to both the ARC sources from the Denon X2200W receiver and the TV. But if I want sound coming from the TV, rather than external sources like SKY, PS4 and PC, I have to use the optical connection on the TV to the receiver. Is that right?

Hi.

No, that's not the case. I'm not sure I understand how you have things connected up but you will have an ARC (Audio Return Channel) HDMI port on your TV. The TV is the only thing using ARC. This should be the one linking your A/V receiver to your TV. It will send picture to the TV and audio back that the TV has generated (e.g. while watching TV from the in built tuner). You may have to switch this feature on on the TV and/or receiver.

Personally I don't use ARC, instead using the optical connection instead. For whatever reason my receiver uses the ARC channel in preference to anything else, even the audio coming into the selected input, so I switched it off.

Cheers,

I think I need to fiddle with the TV settings some more.

I have a HTPC, PS3, PS4 and Sky+HD box all connected to the AV receiver with HDMI leads, and only one HDMI lead plugged into the ARC connection in the TV (plus the optical cable right now).

ETA - Done it! I now have sound from the TV channels coming through the receiver, it was a option that was turned off, which I have now turned on..

Yay!

Now you just need a copy of 'The Revenant' on UHD Bluray to really see what the TV can really do! On BluRay I really like 'Birdman', which isn't an obvious choice but looks stunning.
I haven't got a UHD BR player (yet), just my PS4. I have tried out my backed up BR films in MKV format, and they look great (30+gb files)

SkyHD films aren't so great, no real improvement, but I guess that's down to SKY, but Netflix and Amazon content is much better. This is a great TV!

Am loving the picture quality. The HD MKV film files look stunning, and Prime and Netflix also look great. The magic wand remote is fantastic, too.

I was thinking about upgrading to SKYq, but TBH, we now watch so little SKY (and terrestrial channel) content, it'd be a waste of an extra £12 per month.

I have read some reviews of this TV stating that the sound isn't very strong, but I do not use the TV sound at all (I suspect many do not nowadays). Everything is plugged into the AV receiver.

It seems there are only three 4k BR players available right now, and the cheapest (Samsung) isn't rated that highly. I will wait until there is more choice and the prices come down a little more. The Blu-Rays look visually perfect, I cannot see the 4K BR's being 4 times as clear!

Yes, the TV can play MKV files from a HDD attached, it even has a USB3 connection.

On another subject, I am wondering if it's worth upgrading my centre speaker.

I upgraded the fronts to these:

http://www.richersounds.com/product/floorstanders/...

And they are great for the price, and also upgraded the sub for a Tannoy

The centre and rears are all that's left from my original 5.1 set up, with rear slim floor standers at the rear and the centre. The rears are fine, but would it be worth upgrading the centre for something like this:

http://www.richersounds.com/product/centre-speaker...

It has to be quite small as it sits on the fire mantelpiece just below the TV.

The centre channel is very important and it's normally best practise to 'voice' the front three channels with the same speakers - don't Tannoy make a matching centre channel speaker?
They do, but they are £400ish and way too large. There would be too much of a overhang from the mantelpiece.

Had the LG OLED a week now and loving it still. The lights and darks are so much better than our old plasma, plus the colours are more vibrant.

We played Battlefield 1 on the PS4 on it last night, and that looks gorgeous too.

I bought Avatar on BR (had it on DVD), and even in 'just' BR form the picture is stunning. because there is no backlight, when the picture is meant to be black, it really is black, rather than the normal dark charcoal grey.

So, all in all, I am glad I pushed the boat out and plumped for the OLED rather than LED.

Calibration has definitely improved things.
Didn't realise though that the TV stores different settings for each input, so now I need to do it again for my blu-ray player and Humax Freeview box.
I noticed that in the settings. I will change the HDMI slot that will plug into a 4K BR player when I buy one. At the moment, I have only one HDMI lead going to the TV (ARC input) with the rest (HTPC, PS1/PS2 & SKY) connected to the AV receiver

I am thinking about buying this Panasonic 4K Ultra HD 3D Blu-ray Player, so I can watch upscale BR's on my new TV (also have Oblivion on 4k ultra BR)

http://www.currys.co.uk/gbuk/tv-and-home-entertain...

However, the footprint is too small. It is only 199mm deep, and I wanted to place it on top of my AV receiver and underneath my turntable, but it won't fit, dammit. Here is my set up:

What would be the best solution, plonk it under the PS4?
