Can someone help me understand whats going on?

I have an Acer pc with HDD's connected via usb to a Cambridge audio DAC. I play my FLAC files that way. I have a very nice Yamaha RX-A3010 receiver that is far more capable than I am and discovered tonight that I was streaming my music without the DAC switched on. Pretty sure it does not do pass thru.

Whilst fiddling around I had set my receiver to "PC" and the menu came up with "Audiophile DAC". I selected this and all my albums appeared in a long list. Instant play back thru the amp. I initially assumed that the DAC was the Cambridge Audio but it isn't, I disconnected it to be 100% sure.

So Ive accidentally setup network streaming which is excellent. Both the Yam and the Acer have ethernet cables so no dodgy wifi etc.

A few questions if anyone can answer Id be grateful. :

It all sounds excellent and I assume the DAC function is now performed in the Yamaha?
Will it work without the Acer being on? i.e will the the HDD's be seen on the network without the pc on?
The Yam retailed for £2000 so I assume it has high quality components etc in processing? Should I use the Cambridge Audio DAC for highest quality?

sorry its a bit longwinded, hope you can advise.
Thanks
