One of the best films I have ever seen and I would thoroughly recommend to go and see it at the cinema.

Don't watch any trailers as the completely spoil the film.

If you like Heat and Sexy Beast then this is definitely for you!

Some people did walk out of the cinema at the end saying it was crap
Probably knuckle draggers.

Definitely one of the best, if not the best, film I have seen in my life.

The trailer doesn't instil me with confidence. The flipping a mustang round to go in reverse just seems stupid.
The film isn't like that in the slightest.

If you don't want to go because you think it looks like a stupid film from the trailer then I can assure you it isn't one and it would be a shame not to see it based on that decision.

Just when I was losing hope in cinema as well. The music especially the track for the opening credits was amazing. Truly great film.
Ditto!

Can't remember the last film I saw at the cinema I thought "that was good" let alone "that was great".

Ahh yes, listened to the Kavinsky tune and it took me right back to cruising along the streets of LA in the back seat of the car in the opening scene of the film!
The music was brilliant - really liked the fact I hadn't heard any of the songs before.

If you are thinking of watching the film I would hold off listening to them though as I think it might spoil the film a bit (or am I just being a loser?).

I thought it was junk and was baffled to see the IMDB rating when I got back in from the cinema. Pacing was ridiculous, Gosling miscast and the plot all over the place:

What was the point in the 'race car team'? It went nowhere and was just there to pad out the film to a reasonable length - waste of time. Why did he instantly fall in love with the girl? Why did he agree to help the husband? Why does he seemingly switch from unassuming and discreet to bad ass killer? Absolutely useless character development throughout. Also the least convincing 'gangsters' ever portrayed on film. Apart from the brilliantly shot opening scene, I can't see why this got decent reviews.
I think every single point you made in the spoiler is total rubbish biggrin:

What was the point in the 'race car team'?:

It shows how the relationship between him and the "gangsters" starts and how it then links back when the money is stolen.

Why did he instantly fall in love with the girl?

Have you never heard of love at first sight? I fell in love with my wife when I first saw on holiday 8 years ago. Before she opened her mouth I knew we would be together forever.

Why did he agree to help the husband?

So the kid and the wife aren't murdered!?

Why does he seemingly switch from unassuming and discreet to bad ass killer?

He is always a bad ass killer - you just don't see it. He knows there is a time and a place and is professional in every thing he does.

Just my opinion (and that of most people who have watched it) but I guess the world would be a boring place if we all liked the same stuff! beer

I think that Gran Torino is similar in many ways (cars, gangsters, bad ass turns good to save a life, arty) but is infinitely more convincing. Something about 'Drive' just didn't click for me.
Not seen Gran Turino yet - will get on it!

Watched this Saturday night with the wife and we both really enjoyed it. I like the 80s feel and Ryan Gosling was superb, fecking first gunshot made me jump though.
I flew out of my seat too! Thought I was going to have a heart attack!

That wasn't the first shot.
When they were doing the robbery which went wrong?
Oh, I thought you were talking about something else, was there something in the window then!? Didn't notice it.
Yeah, I caught some movement by the bathroom window just before.
That was at the motel not the Pawn shop wink

Mate is going tonight and needs a partner to share his Orange wednesday. Worth seeing?
Can't you just read the thread?

In short, everyone I know loved it and I think it's the best film I have seen in the last 10 years at the cinema.

I just watched the trailer, which I liked, then read some of the comments. One said: "This is one of those really bad trailers that show all key events in this movie! Thank God i watched this movie before the trailer!" That comment had been liked 10 times.

bks.
I did put in my OP -

"Don't watch any trailers as the completely spoil the film."

Very impressed with this, some tense scenes.

Can't say any of the trailers I had seen spoiled anything.
You haven't watched the Official Trailer that comes up on YouTube as the top result then! It shows EVERY major event in the film - right from start to finish.

You must have just seen 30 second TV trailers?

Also, can anybody please explain why did he leave the girl after all?
I don't think he did - he just hadn't got back yet. That was the whole reason for leaving the money - so he could keep the girl?

He had to leave because he'd be constantly looking over his shoulder because of all the people he killed and if he went back he'd just be putting her in danger again.
Why not take the money then? Hey ho.

Also the Mafia dude said that the girl was safe, he was not going to touch her, presumably if they stayed together, there was always a danger should be "collateral damage" or the mafia dude would change his mind?
But everyone that knew about the links was killed? The only thing linking him back to it all was the money.

I thought he left the money so that he could get Irene and be clean?

I guess open endings leave it up to our own interpretation!

The only awkward moment for me was in car chase scene - how could he manage to shift gears going backwards? You can clearly hear him shifting twice in the Mustang. Maybe 300bhp can explain this miracle smile
Also, when he ran in to the side of the limo punting it on to the beach, how come the front of his car was still ok with the lights working?
I thought that. He had, only moments before, hit the back of the limo pretty hard yet in the next scene the front of the car appeared OK.
Surely the most unrealistic thing was the 300C being all over the Mustang GT with a a supposed "driving god" at the wheel!

I'm in the minority but I thought it was terrible, I didn't like the bits where Gosling was staring silently into space, the bits that wanted to be in Heat with Moby's tune playing over again and again and again, the female lead was so forgettable I can't remember who it was but she seemed to echo Goslings bland/non existent performance but she managed to take doing nothing to a new level.

Come to think of it, I didn't like any of it.
Terrible?

No matter how much you didn't like it surely you can appreciate why people would do and that it clearly isn't a "terrible movie".

Go watch Resident Evil 4 Afterlife...that's terrible!

Its a movie I'd avoid seeing again, even if that meant sitting in the rain on a park bench.
So you would avoid seeing this film but are happy to go into your garage and see an X6?! Each to their own! hehe
