If you like Grand Designs you should have a look at this one - http://www.channel4.com/programmes/the-restoration...

Series Summary
Across the country, thousands of old buildings lie forgotten and neglected, tangled up by red tape and development restrictions. Many of these orphaned properties are steeped in history and are of outstanding architectural interest, yet are slowly being left to rot.

Architect George Clarke is passionate about our architectural heritage. In this series he travels the British Isles meeting the stubborn romantics who want to breathe new life into the architectural treasures he unearths on his journey. His mission is to help them transform these undervalued gems into brand new homes fit for 21st century living.

Filmed over two years Restoration Man watches as these wonderful buildings - from windmills and ancient towers to gate lodges and medieval churches - are transformed. But threatened by spiralling budgets and the credit crunch, plus the stresses and strains of working with old structures and confusing bureaucracy, none of these projects are an easy ride.

Excellent, I caught the Ice House episode over lunch today and tomorrow's (12:05 C4) is the Medieval Hall and the 70 room Mansion.

Searched on here and was surprised the series hadn't been mentioned.

If the vehicle inspection pit isn't converted into a wine cellar he has no imagination.

It kind of reminds me of the house in Batteries not Included after the little flying aliens have rebuilt it.

Take initial budget, double it. Then add on half of the original budget again (for contingency, legal access costs)

I think £750,000

You can use the telescope to gaze out on the view across Yorkshire, but only in the Winter because in the Spring when the trees have got their leaves back you won't see a thing.

I think doing the windows and making it wind and weather tight was a good idea, it shouldn't make it a rush and he can work inside in bad weather unlike many builds on here or Grand Designs where the windows come last and the builds often have puddles of water inside.

I liked it, even the bath. Brass is such a Victorian thing, to have a brass bath was a very modern Victorian feature.

Or if they do they insist on modern cinder block based building repairs and not sympathetic to the original because they think restoring as per the original might in some way blur the line between original and new, as if photo evidence won't show what's been done and anything added can always be taken away later.

No, just very tall ceilings.
