I love films set around this time in London, everything looks so different yet so familiar.

Also the fashion and the music seems to be constant with this particular time, neither '60s or 70s yet really good. Also the cars look so different, with lots of 'old banger' 50s cars still being used by people together with 'modern' ones.

Watched Deep End the other night which is a great example of this type of film, but could have done with more shots of London, but the Cat Stevens music captures that time perfectly.

Bronco Bullfrog is another good example showing the tower blocks of 1970 East London.

I was only 3/4 at that time, but it seems like a completely different era. (Well it was really).

Am I making any sense here, or is it just my imagination? hehe

Any other recommendations, if anybody knows what I'm on about? Think The Double Decklers but less Elstree more London. smile

Withnail and I was set in 1969.
And it does a reasonable job with the beaten up old Jag and spartan boozers.

Maybe I shouldn't be so specific about 69/70 and maybe say 69-72, as I'm looking forward to Death Line on the horror channel this week which is st on the tube system and is from 1972.

Seeing the tube from that time is also a great love of mine as I used to be on it quite a bit at that time and it seems so different now.

A little earlier (64?) but I would suggest 'Blow Up'.
Blow Up was '66 and has a real swinging '60s feel about it, as does Bedazzled from '67.

Please, Sir was '71 and has the feel I'm on about. smile

More Elstree than London really.

Can't remember if The Offence was filmed in London or not, as I haven't seen it in over 20 years.

Frenzy. Hitchcock. 1972 (a touch later that you might be thinking). Not many films better portray London in that era. Multiple scenes shot in and around the original Covent Garden, and Oxford Street.

Hitchcock grew up there, and that's why he spent a lot of time crafting the film to accuracy, and for me is almost the definitive capture.
Cheers, that sounds like a worthwhile £5 punt on Amazon. smile

THis thread reminds me of the sketch from little Britain when the man goes into teh toy shop asking for a Pirate Memory Game including octopuses and space shuttles.
That's exactly what I was reminded of as soon as I saw the thread title! biggrin
Well I got one decent sounding recommendation out of it. hehe

I've been scratching my head all night about one that was set in a London comprehensive school and Google hasn't helped me with what it's called. And it's not To Sir with Love.

I did think about Sunday Bloody Sunday yesterday, but can't remember if there was much in the way of London scenes in it.

Need some more obscure London films from that time. hehe

Looking forward to Frenzy arriving. smile

Dracula A.D. 1972? Nice Hammer Horror in "Swinging London". "Death Line" also Hammer from this period.
Not strictly London as such but Quadrophenia, McVicar, That'll Be The Day and the sequel Stardust are all favourites of mine.

Twisted Nerve (love that music), Up The Junction, The Ipcress File, The Spy Who Came In From The Cold..
I'm recording Death Line tonight, it's on the horror channel. smile

Quadrophenia just winds me up, it's supposed to be 1964 and they don't even make the slightest effort, there are '70s cars everywhere. hehe

I was a dispatch rider in 1981, I know a decade out, and I remember delivering to the Isle of Dogs. Loads of warehouses and lock ups each with wild dogs on chains. It was a very grim area and look at it now biggrin
Used to go to gigs at the old 'Anarchy Centre' in Wapping around 1981.

Got out at Wapping tube station and it was just a load of old derelict buildings and wire fences you had to clamber round to get in. hehe

How it's changed.

Haven't seen that in a long, long time.

One of the reasons I bought a P5B Coupe in the '90s. hehe

I recorded the Steptoe & Son film last night in the hope there might be some good 1971 London footage. hehe

Watcehd Please Sir the other week and it was rubbish, nowhere near as good as I'd remembered.

The Black Windmill starring Michael Caine, has from the little I have seen, a London setting.

It is regularly shown on ITV4 but I have yet to watch it in its entirety.

Anyone looking for TV and film footage second half 1966 Huddersfield, just after World Cup Final, preferably including shots of trolleybuses.
hehe

Watched The Mutations from '72 the other week with Tom Baker. Had some interesting London scenes, and I had to freeze frame one scene to have a closer look which had a London street with a beaten up old Facel Vega HK500 parked in it. cool

Just wish I could remember the one set in the school, it ticked every box, think it even had Cat Stevens or someone doing the music, or was it a kind of 'Lazy Sunday Afternoon' type song. scratchchin

You're thinking of S.W.A.L.K which these days is better known as "Melody", released in 1971 and shot throughout 1970.

Interesting, cheers for that. Hopefully it's what I was thinking of and is worth an £8 Amazon punt. smile

Has anybody been watching the Rank "Britain on Film" shorts on BBC 4? Great colour period shots of Britain (including London) between about 1958 and 1970. Some great cars keep cropping up (and the odd aeroplane - like a Hunting Clan Viscount on the episode last week).
Great stuff, although I'm not sure what the BBC are doing with it, it got to episode 5 or so with another 7 to go and now they're running it again from the start. confused

As you can see, I can't do that multi-quote thing hehe
