Has anyone else mad problems cancelling a Sky TV subscription?

I've sent an email as they requested but reckon that they can't cancel it without speaking to me. So why the email?

I've been told they will phone me but it is not very reassuring:

We’ll attempt to call you over the next few days so we can verify the required details with you, however if we’re unable to speak with you we won't be able to cancel your account. The only exception to this is if you're cancelling within 31 days cooling off period.

They provide an 033 number, which I assume is not covered by my free BT calls during the day but it would appear that it is not manned, not during the dozen or so calls I've made. Either that or they are inundated with people trying to cancel.

Anyone had similar problems or can offer advice?

I've checked: I've phoned them 10 times in a little over an hour and each time I get the recorded message to say they are engaged. I assume that this means I've incurred a charge.

My main problem is that I can't sit on the phone for hours. I'm working.

They don't phone evidently.

I've got two of my children marrying next year within 6 months of one-another so have to cut back to an extent. The only things I watch on TV are ruby - free BT sport - and F1. A neighbour has an open door policy on GP day so that's settled when it's only on Sky. I'm told there is a £25 charge for Freeview. I'll give that a run.

I've just sorted through my DVD collection. We've got around 900 with over nearly 70 that we haven't yet seen, so that's the next four months occupied.

It'd be nice if they answered the phone though.

I've managed to cancel. I went via live chat.

I expected an offer as I've got the full package, less HD and I've been with them for over 15 years. But the best the guy gave me was exactly what was offered on their site: £28. That said, I was unlikely to go for anything under 1/3rd off.

So as I say, a bit miffed. I expected some concession.

31 days notice.

I was on the live chat for 84 minutes. The poor guy on the other end just wouldn't let me go.

Interesting.

I tried to cancel that way (as well as via email).

I was told that it wasn't possible.
That's what it said on the website but I thought I'd give it a go. I've just had the 'official' email. I await the 50% offer.

My wife and I kept a log of what we watched on TV. What surprised me was that I clocked up over 18 hours a week, a bit over 6 of which was Pointless! Then there's F1 which adds only a little less, at around 5, although not every week. The rest is bits and pieces, although box sets of Thrones for me and 24 hrs for my wife take a fair slice. There's the news and a couple of documentaries.

Come the rugby season there'll be two matches a week on top of that.

18 hours: it seems remarkable to me. I watch some things just because they are on.

I've opted for the basic Freeview package and an entertainment lot. We've got the option of adding more but I'm not sure what.

Movies are a big disappointment of late. I've probably started a dozen or so in the last month or so only to turn them off. Yet I've got over 900 on DVDs, around 60+ of which we've not yet seen. And with BT sport, free with my broadband, there's a limit to how much I can physically cope with.

Half the GPs - that's the one thing I will miss - is enough I suppose. I'm out every Sat in the rugby season, so miss the qually. But 20 Sundays per year is too much of a demand on my time.

I can always go back I suppose, but given how much cheaper it is - I'm saving nearly £50pcm - I doubt it unless BT is rubbish.

A little update:

I went for BT YouView and opted for the basic plus factual programmes. My wife and I were going to look at 'things' after a couple of months and then decide if we wanted anything else.

We've been watching our DVDs. Vera, episodes 1-3, GoThrones, 24 (something like 8000 minutes I think of run-time and some of the films that we've bought and not watched, and more. We've got about 30 various box sets - watched a Miss Marple tonight.

We've bought a few film DVDs, oldish ones for around £5 max. Watched The Illusionist last week. My daughter's fiance has a collection of over 1000 DVDs. We now loan one-another films.

Had a chat with my wife last night and realised that we've still got more programmes than we need. Next week I'm off to a mate's for F1. I'll take a bottle of decent wine (for his missus) and that, for me, is more than enough for the £15pcm we pay. I find it difficult to believe that we payed nearly £70pcm, that's £800pa, to watch half an F1 season.

I watch live rugby and then watch the matches I missed or recorded. I've even watched the occasional soccer match.

A good decision.

Call again and take the option to cancel all or part of your Sky subscription. Then tell that you want to give notice to cancel, they will then offer all sorts of wonderful deals to keep you.
After a decade and a half of being a Sky customer I phoned to reduce my subscription or cancel it altogether.

It took me 55 minutes (from memory) to fail to receive any offer of reduction at all.

I mentioned a poor business model but there was no give at all. I also mentioned that I could get more than they were offering at £28 for under £16 at BT. Still no move. I told the chap that I wanted to be excluded from their email marketing list, and he replied that this would be a bad move as I would be offered some 'brilliant' offers after a couple of months or so.

Where's the logic in that?

He pretended not to know about the Freeview card for the Sky box if I cancelled my subscription. Not that I wanted it, but you never know.

After some 9 months with BT I can't see me ever going back. Fair enough, I don't watch an awful lot of TV, and with the free Netflix there's more on offer than I will ever see, but even so the price is very good and the picture is every bit as clear as Sky.

If I'd been offered 'half price' for 6 months for the basic package from Sky - in reality a reduction of 25% as the minimum term would have been 12 months - I probably would not have considered it, but half price for a year might - might - have just convinced me to stay as I'm quite lazy with such things.
