I was just going through some old films today and got to thinking, dangerous I know, but a lot of films from the past are well known just by their theme music. This seems to have been lost recently. Maybe too many films are being made, maybe composers are 2 a penny, I don't know.

However, what films do you know that are instantly known when hearing their theme?

Let me start....

The Good, The Bad and The Ugly
Superman
Star Wars

I've left plenty of scope for you.... smile

Jaws....how could I have missed that..also The Great Escape. In among those, I'll give you 'Bridge over the River Kwai'

I'll bet you though, that those will not mean anything to persons under 28 (random age guess)

How many however, would recognise the X men theme? (nope-me neither)

ETA....I know the Stranglers song, and have seen the film but the song means more as a chart hit to me (old git).

Just shows how things move with the times!

Midnight Cowboy

The Graduate (identified by the tune "Mrs Robinson")

Star Wars

All the Indiana Jones films
I'll give you Indy and Star Wars, but the others are more songs that have defined the film, not the first thing that enters (one's) your head when you hear it.

Let's try this...close your eyes and tell me what film it is (or at least the type of film)

There again, I've just added another...James Bond!

Well I never realised there was so many. Some of the classics I never even remembered.

Are there any where the film is awful but the theme is brilliant? The majority are excellent films as well.

Here's another, Bridge over the River Kwai.

Having looked at the one's you mentioned Eric, I am quite surprised how many there are that became (or were previously) 'chart hits' I guess the ultimate in that genre would be either Grease or Saturday Night Fever.

Personally I prefer the big screen orchestrated themes, they evoke more emotion in me.

Also, to whoever it was that mentioned Dances with Wolves, have a star...that's one of my favourite films!
