Anyone else excited for this? We've wound the kids up all week for it and having some party food to make a Saturday night of it. My wife is ten years my junior so we don't have all that much from our childhoods that we can both relate to but I guess this transcended both our age groups when it first came out and we both loved it. Me as a teenager and her as a kid.

The kids have been watching all the Gladiator spots on the 'net and it looks like a proper reboot-there's a modern Jet and Wolf by the look of it.

Bloody brilliant in our house, we absolutely loved it! Obviously it was the BBC so we had to have a same sex marriage for the kids to ask "what?" but apart from that it was joyous unadulterated Saturday night fun.

Gladiators were superb and the young lad who battled through his knee op was a trouper, I felt the pang of pain that makes you spew when he hit that second stride on the travelator (3 knee ops here).

Really?

Why would that be a problem for your kids?
Why are you concerned what my kids are aware of?

You felt the need to point out something perfectly normal as odd.
No I didn’t.

Was thinking about the "rings" game earlier.

Proper brutal when a gladiator especially on the men when the gladiator could use their whole weight and jump to try and pull them off.

Edited to add just rewatched a classic game of "hang tough"

Lass held on in sheer pain with a gladiator jumping on her. Broke 2 vertibrae on her fall.

Hope they dont allow the gladiator to jump when hanging onto the contendor.

Edited by asfault on Saturday 13th January 20:47
We picked up on that, was there a new rule that said the gladiator couldn’t jump onto you and pull you off the rings? Maybe previous incidents meant they couldn’t play that way?

I think the nostalgia aspect can’t be ignored, we made a proper Saturday night of it with our children-pizza, sweets, party food with dips…

Yes it was recreating our childhoods to a certain aspect but the kids, 4 and 7 just absolutely loved it too!

Both now have their favourite gladiators.

Interesting to see the new Jet didn’t feature at all, wonder if she was injured as she was plugged a lot in the build up.

We’re having a lazy Sunday morning before the outlaws coming over for Sunday lunch and the kids have asked to watch it again, you don’t get a better endorsement than that.

Bradley Walsh is a good host but his son added nowt, I could understand it if it was his daughter as it’s a male and female sporting show so it’s common sense to have a female host as well-the best pairing of the OG British gladiators was fash and ulrika I reckon so it would make sense to copy that.

In reality it was so well done there’s little to pick about though.

Someone mentioned the Netflix doco about the original American Gladiators and if you can you should watch that-it was ace!

Anyone remember when we had the celeb version and the American v British specials?

The guy who played superman back in the 90s tv show smallville came over to ours and he was an absolute beast! Ex football player if I remember correctly?

I think sky showed the American gladiators back then and it really was a great thing for kids to watch.

Great to have competitive sport for kids on the tv.

The thing with that game is once the gladiator had let the contestant go, if the contestant got up before the gladiator they had a free run at the centre circle.

It sort of needed an added rule that once you went down you needed to go back out the circle and start again

Just as an update, we had a party night for the kids with another sporting family and we just loved it again. Even better the second week as we're now getting to spot the strengths and weaknesses between Gladiators.

BBC are going to need to push this series more as people are going to be really into it. Strictly and Bake Off have those mid week shows and if Gladiators did too my kids would be watching it all-they've honestly waited all week for tonights show. I even called in at a motorway service station to buy them a Gladiators magazine but there isn't one.

I think this might just be the surprise hit of 2024.

The travelator looked proper fast when the girls got to it first time.
benefits of rewind.
takes about 3 seconds for the arrow to get from the top to the bottom
First girl fell 3 times, 4 attempt it took about 4 seconds for the arrow to get to the bottom
And 5 seconds for the 2nd girls run.

Gonna rewind for the boys to see.
I don't think the eliminator gets the credit it deserves unless you're you're used to that form of exercise. Either by fluke or design there's parts of it any mere mortal could blitz if they're half fit but by the same margin all of them together is fking brutal.

The travelator at the finish is cruel beyond measure. The amount of folk who get there gassed is no joke, it's still a proper uphill sprint! I class myself fit but I reckon I could do it once with nothing else before it, start putting circuits in and it would be H A R D !

The other thing is the rope wall climb. The staggered start means nearly everyone hits it at a different time so by the time the second person jumps its already moving-if you want to win you want to be on that climb before your competitor or you'll miss the jump and sump to the bottom. That's before you consider technique where most people don't know how to climb a rope ladder effectively.

Despite saying all that most of the adults at our Gladiators Party (how times change) reckoned they'd give it a go-truth be told I reckon only two would have half a chance.

Not ashamed to say we bought the kids big foam hands in red and blue hehe

All good fun, kids are loving it. Things definitely seem a bit watered down for the new generation - the gladiators aren’t as gladiatorial as they used to be! Bring back the roids!
Good point! There's a load of different between looking good and being a machine though, take two of the new Gladiators-Diamond and Giant. Those two are fking units-absolute perfect specimens in certain ways. But in some games they'd be useless, I know some people that would run rings around them in some games.

In the modern world of free runners and their like I'm actually amazed the Gladiators still look like "Gladiators"!

The girl jumping the start was pretty unfair, it happened a lot in last week's episode as well-they need to stamp out some of that. I think if she hadn't jumped the start the paramedic girl would have got to the travelator first because she was much faster on that initial section.

I still think the rope ladder wall isn't set up right with the jump onto it as whoever jumps second nearly always falls as they're now jumping at a moving target-that can lose you ten seconds by itself.

Not that any of this is complaints, it's so good it's worth nit-picking over the small details!

Look at the female rugby player though, can’t remember her name but the girl who fell through the diamond grid-she’s a weapon as well-exactly the type of player you’d want on your side.

The other family who watched with us last night, one is a personal trainer and the other plays hockey for England and we were just saying what a joy it is to have some competitive sport aimed at kids.

It’s easy to start to feel that competitive sport is being written out of education these days, or that inclusivity is pushed beyond what might seem acceptable.

I rewatched an old clip and the old gladiators took it so seriously! Shadow looked like an absolute animal on Duel (the batons looked heavier back then, and the podiums were further apart), he gave out some serious beatings.

Surprised he was only 6ft 1, I guess he'd looked fairly normal compared to some of these modern guys
He went off the rails a bit!

Yeah I did a bit of a Google black hole about him just now. Not ended up very well for him.
Really worth listening to the James English Anything Goes podcast with Shadow, he's done his time and hopefully back on the straight and narrow.
