Just another part of the same old same old. What is said in public and what is said behind closed doors are very different. The US has little desire to go to war again and have another 10 year occupation and the pos men in frocks are due another election soon... It's the annual ramp up to Iranian new year.
i'd hope its purely rhetoric by iran?

because if it ever came to conflict iran would suffer the same as iraq - like/dislike the usa when it comes to military might iran would last about a day!

sadly as in iraq, the ordinary soldiers/population would be the victims whilst ' i'm a dinner jacket' and the mullahs would be in a deep shelter

thanks for all your comments been interesting to hear various points of view

wonder how long the iranian air defense network would last if the us deployed the F22 Raptor - less than a day?

the other thing to bear in mind is that for over 20 years the us have been 'war gaming' iran as a potential enemy - they know the country and its capabilities inside out

nobody in the middle east wants iran to have nukes - inc their friends in syria

many 'arab' states may hate israel but they accept that currently there exists a balance of power and that israel would only ever use its nukes if it faced annihilation (possible if iran had nukes)

as many suggest its probably sabre rattling before iranian elections

because if they try to blockade the gulf then they would be unable to export their own oil

They have to make these threats, don't they? At the moment it looks like Israel and the US are going to do everything in their power to stop Iran making the bomb. Irans response is that if you do anything, we'll totally fk the global economy while it's already at its weakest by closing the strait.
called shooting yourself in the foot as iran would be the first to suffer

and you think people with this mentality should have nukes?

also see my previous post

NOBODY in the middle east wants iran to have nukes (and probably nobody in the rest of the world)

I don't see that Iran can agress against the West, it has no "plays" against the USA alone.

Consider the number of USA air bases in the vicinity:

How can you defend yourself against that?

This is all sabre rattling, mark my words. Iran will never be the first to strike, because that will be the first and last military decision the regime will make before being wiped out. It would probably be the best thing for the Iranian people in the long run (despite the immediate casualties) so they can take back control of their country from these religious nutters and develop their economy and society hand in hand with the west instead of against it. Don't forget the high level of education and expertise of the Iranians in all forms of art and sciences, there are prominent Iranians working at a high level in NASA and plenty of other agencies around the world http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_Iranian_Ameri... who along with the people in Iran want nothing more but for their country to be free.
i agree entirely with you - but sometimes logic goes out of the window with some middle east despots

look at iraq and saddam - wanting a conflict with the usa/rest of the gulf over kuwait

i've met a few iranian (some called themselves persian) people - really nice folk who actually distance themselves and their culture from arabs - they are also far more amenable to jews

they have a rich and deep culture in terms of architecture/history/poetry/literature etc and are probably the most educated people in the middle east

I am Iranian myself and live in the Middle east amongst the A-Rabs. Very different people compared to the Iranians, the Arabs are going through a very fast development phase with all this (relatively) new oil money.

Yes the Iranians are very well educated, as are the Lebanese in the region. Also newer or lesser developed nations in the region are catching up, I've met many educated Bahraini's, OmaniOmani's and Jordanian's who have a somewhat similar culture to Iranians, very different from Kuwaiti's/Emiratis/Saudis.

We've been waiting for 20 years for the Iranian people within Iran to stand up and defeat the regime, but without some serious outside help I am resigned to the fact that this will not be possible.

i wish you and your fellow countrymen/women the best for the future

you have paid a heavy price so far in the pursuit of democracy in iran

believe me when i say nobody i know in the 'west' wishes you harm

however, your 'leaders' seem intent on forcing a confrontation with the west - of course the victims will be the ordinary iranian people - sorry!
