I would think there will a trouble, though the militarized police force complete with armoured ex-military vehicles will be formidable...passions are running very high now...big crowd outside. Crowds in other US cities too. Evidence did not support an indictment. Extended sympathies to victim of shooting. Commented that there was tension between the police and the populace WIll release all evidence. Complained about social media and the 24-hour news cycle. Dismissed many eyewitness accounts. It did seem like a thorough investigation.

Bottom line: no charges. Many of the community will not accept this, I fear.

There is a broader context here with income inequalities at an all time high and falling mobility that is causing huge tensions. So called reality TV and social media slavishly following the privileged lives of the rich and famous combined with drops in the standard of living at the middle and bottom of the society are creating a powder keg. There is always a danger that these riots could get way out of control. Regardless of the facts surrounding the case, its what people believe that determines the next phase.

The event itself, tragic as it was is not uncommon.

What is important here is that it is galvanizing the black community. I was young when Detroit was practically burned to the ground in the sixties.

We are living in world of increasing radicalization everywhere (and not just the Middle East), low voter turnouts, historical distrust of government, increasing equality..(in the US now higher than 1929), heavily armed citizens in the US, both black and white, massive distrust of police, and a failing middle class, in particularly in the working class white community.

The reaction here is a broader one, and I am concerned that this will not be the end of this situation, but the beginning.

The December 8 New Yorker cover. St. Louis is a very tough, divided town. I know it well.
